i think its pretty much personal preference honestly.
we have been to a million boy baptisms and there was really no protocol. This baby will be a boy and i just started at looking at baptism outfits- there are some really cute white 'suits' for boys. I saw a couple of cute ones at JC penney's. GL
It was so hard for us!! I thought most of what was out there for boys looked cheap or was too girly. I ended up finding a white long sleeved/pants jump suit thing on Potterybarnkids.com but they don't seem to have them anymore. It was plain white silk, not that cheap satiny looking stuff. It was hard to find, but maybe look on ebay.
We bought a baptism outfit that had white knicker length pants and it had a little white shirt & vest. I can't remember if I bought it at JCPenney or Sears. But if a lot of people will put their boys in a baptismal gown too. So really it's up to you what you want him to wear.
My sister and I went out and purchased some dressy clothes and then my family and DH's family all voted on what we wanted the boys to wear. They ended up with a blue long panted long sleeved one pieces with a collar. It was vintage looking and I loved it. They looked really cute.
I think it really depends on the church as well. My church is pretty casual and laid back so the whole white outfit would have been a bit much.
We were cheap and had DS wear a white onesie and socks with a "Baptism" bib. It was hot as heck outside that day and he would have been a mess in anything else.
We did a traditional gown - Irish linen that we got embroidered and we hope to have all the subsequent babies baptized in it and then pass it down. We got jokes about him looking like a girl, but it didn't bother me - I tend to like the traditional stuff anyway. I had to buy it online though so it wasn't a frilly, lacy gown like they carry in stores for girls.
I did not use a gown for either of my boys. I got cute little white baptism suits for my first two (one was a shimmery 'baptism' type material and the second was a white cotton). My third son was 2 yrs old when he was baptized, so he just wore a white dress shirt and tie.
DS wore a gown. But it was really a white romper with a "skirt" that buttoned on over the bottom part of the romper so that it became a gown. We had the gown on for the bapitsm itself and took it off for the party and some of the photos. I thought it was a wonderful mix of tradition and "boyish." DH was cool with it, but he is really easy going when it comes to stuff like that. It had a little hat too. We got it at a children's boutique that had tons to choose from. Good luck!
I bought DS' at Baby's R Us. It's a white, cotton short-all set, with an attached white, short sleeve shirt with a peter pan collar, and a matching hat (which kind of looked like a yarmulke with a brim.)
I haven't seen many boys wearing gowns lately... in fact, I couldn't find a single traditional gown for boys or girls. They were all dresses or suits/short alls.
