Enormous Fibroid anyone? and NT PIP

We had our NT scan yesterday and the baby looks great. I'll try to PIP.

Unfortunately, they found a 9cm fibroid.  I'm pretty nervous after reading what risks are increased with large fibroids.  I don't have another doctor appointment for 3 weeks before I get to talk to a medical professional about it.  Has anyone ever had one this large during pregnancy?  I'm worried about all sorts of things I read, but I'm mostly worried that it will inhibit my chances of having the natural birth that I want.

  • I've not had a fibroid but my advice is that you should probably not read anything online.  I've done that before for other medical things and it scared me to death.  I would call your OB with any questions you have and they should be able to answer them for you.  Or make a list for your upcoming appointment.  Good luck to you!!

I'm not one of them, but I think there were a few January Momma's who also had fibriods. But I agree with PP don't search online and just keep a list of questions for your next appt.

  • My best friend is due in August and she has several fibroids.  The doctor has been monitoring them all along, and told her as long as they stay high and away from the birth canal then a vaginal birth will be fine.  If the fibroids move towards the birth canal, then the doctor is going to recommend a c-section.  So, my understanding is that is more about placement of the fibroids, and not necessarily size.  I would definitely consult your doctor about it.  On the plus side, my friend has a ton of ultrasound pictures because they check the fibroids at every appointment.

GOSH DARN IT.  It's down in the back of my uterus (ultrasound tech said near my butt, whatever that means). I hope low and away from the birth canal will still work :(

I have two fibroids, and like the PP said, the placement of the fibroids is what is important. My doctor said that they would monitor the fibroids because they tend to grow during pregnancy (so far, mine haven't grown). I have one that is close to the cervix, so if that one grows, then my only option would be a c-section.

I've been told that as they grow, the fibroids may also cause some discomfort.

  • I have a few fibroids.  My dr said we would just watch them and make a game plan further down the line.  It's too early to say what they will or won't do.

  • Thanks ladies.  Just one more thing to worry about I guess.

I have two large fibroids.  When I was pregnant with DD#1, one of them was 8cm and the other was about 6.5cm.  Like the others said, it's all about the placement of the fibroids.  I had to get an ultra sound every month to monitor the growth, but I went on to have a normal vaginal delivery.  After having DD, I took BCP for a year and a half.  I stopped taking them due to health reasons and got pregnant 2 months later.  When I went in for my 12 week appointment, my fibroids were only 3cm and 3.5cm, which means the lack of hormones and BCP helped to shrink them.  This time with my 1st pregnancy, they were more than double the size they are now.

  • I have one (7cm) that the Dr's have checked a few times as well. They don't seem concerned at this point. The only thing that I notice is having to pee more frequently.
