Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Outgrowing PNP but I'm not ready for him to go!

I don't know what made me look but I just looked at the weight limit for the bassinet part of the pack n play and it's 15 lbs! My DS is a little over 13 lbs so he is fast approaching! I am not ready to move him out of our room since he still wakes up several times a night. But I go back to work in 3 weeks so I figure I better start the transition now in case it doesn't go smoothly. (I can't believe the changing table will hold 25lbs but the bassinet only 15.)

How did you transition from a bassinet/PNP to a crib? DS does NOT like to sleep there during the day. He'll wake up after 30 mins and cry/not go back to sleep. He will play in it and watch his mobile though. Maybe night will be different?

Any tips or advice? Thanks!

(BTW I know he's not quite 3 months yet but I figure he's close!)

  • Glad I read this... Our LO sleeps in the bassinet part of the PnP and he weighs about 21 pounds. Yikes! I guess we'll start the transition tonight!

  • you can always drop the mattress to the regular position and allow your LO to sleep that way.

I've thought about that but thought it would be hard to put him down when he's asleep. I haven't tried it though, so maybe I should.

  • DD slept in a moses basket in our room the first 4 weeks and one night we just went cold turkey... We did the same bedtime routine except put her to sleep in her room in her crib. She did awesome... She was still waking up once or twice a night but I found I got much better sleep with her in her crib because she was such a loud sleeper (she grunts). Now she wakes up in the morning and just looks around and talks to herself.

  • When DS was 2 months old, we started putting him in his crib at night. Like pp said, we just did the normal bedtime routine, but put him in his crib instead. He'd never been in it except for once for a photo opp. He slept well in there. He was still nursing a couple times a night at that point, but he slept better and longer in his crib. Good luck!

  • We also just switched LO over a little over a week ago.  Honestly, she's been sleeping better since.  I think that she used to make little noises, and I would go get her to feed her because I thought that's what she wanted, when she was really just needing to settle herself back to sleep.  Now I wake up either ZERO or once per night for a feeding (during my sleep time).  I had a hard time also with the thought of her not being there, but I think we're both getting better sleep now (hasn't affected DH's sleep - he slept through it all!).  Good luck!
  • We made the switch at 3 months because we really needed to get more sleep.  We bought a projector/music mobile and a monitor.  I had been writing down her daily routine for about a week prior (this helped a lot when figuring out what time we needed to start the process) I wanted to get her on a schedule for when I went back to work.  We started on a Friday night. Fed her, bathed her, read and put her in her crib.  She hated it, and would cry. I stood out of eyesite and conforted her every few minutes by patting her on her tummy and talking to her. (instructions from Dr.)  After about 30 mins of this routine I picked her up and held her for awhile then we tried it again.   After 3 days she got used to it.  We made sure that it was at the same time every night. Now I can put her down at her bedtime and she will go to sleep within 10 mins. The mobile is great, she loves talking to her animal friends. I even hear her in the morning talking to them. I don't think it would have worked without it!
