Looking for an all-natural doctor in the Sarasota area

Hi, I am newly expecting and new to the Sarasota area.  I am looking to have an all natural Bradley birth.  I need an OB that is sympathetic to my ideas.  They do not have to believe as I do, but must be willing to honor my wishes for no medical interruption unless it is a deadly situation.  Also I would like a doctor to respect my wishes not to vaccinate or poison my child.  Thanks so much!

Re: Looking for an all-natural doctor in the Sarasota area

  • I used a midwife and birthing center in Sarasota.  Birthways Family Birthing Center.  www.sarasotamidwife.com  They are amazing.  I don't know if you are open to the idea of a birthing center or if you want a hospital.  They offer birthing center and home births.  A water birth is an option for both.  My daughter was born with me squatting on the floor of the birthing center and I wouldn't have changed a thing.  I fully intend on using them again next time around.  I also refuse to vaccinate and there are VERY few pediatricians in the area willing to work with that.  We use Whole Child Pediatrics off of University.  They aren't happy about us not vaccinating but they will accept us.  Their staff was really bad but they just got all new people and it's getting better.  We spent a long time looking for a pedi and they were the only ones we could find.  If you have any more questions feel free to pm me.

  • Thanks so much!  I actually just scheduled a consult with Christina for the 19th!  I just need to get over the fear of 'What if...'  I really want a Bradley Birth with little or no interruption... even from a midwife and you will definitely not find that at a hospital.

That is really crummy about finding pedi.  I do not want to be degraded because of my personal beliefs.

Thanks so much for the reply.  I will def pm when I need you!

  • I love Christina so much.  They require you to take a child birth class and most people go with The Bradley Method.  I don't think I got over the 'what if...' fear probably until DD was born.  Try to think about other things.  Birthways is really good about no intervention.  I spent about 20 hours of my 26 hour labor at the birthing center and they let me do whatever I needed to do, including giving birth on the floor.

Our pediatrician isn't degrading but we do get a lecture every visit.  It's kind of annoying.  They always feel the need to tell me that it's ok to change my mind and they will vaccinate at any time.  They also always ask why I don't want to vaccinate.  I feel like they are trying to talk me into vaccinating.  We interviewed a pedi that said he would give all vaccinations at birth if he was able to.  We quickly left that office and never went back.

I hope everything is going well and good luck with your pedi hunt.  My real name is Crystal by the way.

  • Thanks, Crystal.  I'm Beth!  Nice to meet you!

I'm really excited to meet Christina.... I'm about 80% sure we will use Birthways.  I probably just need to speak with her in person before i am 100%.

So, do you have any other tips for a first time mom-to-be?

  • Hey I live in North Port, and I'm going to Birthways and Christina and her whole office staff are SO nice. Kristen is a student there and she's so sweet and everyone makes you feel really comfortable. This is my first baby, and they've really made me feel comfortable.

I am hoping they can recommend a pediatrician who doesn't pressure you into vaccines.

     Healthy and Happy pregnancy :)

  • Tips for first time mom to be:

1)Rest as much as you can now because you won't get much sleep once baby arrives and it makes the pregnant body feel better.

2)Stick to what you think is the right thing to do and don't change your plans just because somebody tells you differently.  I had very little support with my plan to have an out of hospital birth but I did it any way and couldn't be happier.

3)If you plan on breastfeeding get as much information now as you can.  Take a class if you have a chance.  It's hard and I had to learn everything with a brand new hungry baby.  I've never had to use formula and I'm very proud of that but trust me there were some times when I would sit there in tears trying to feed my DD thinking about nothing other than making formula bottles.

The birthing center has a list of pediatricians that they or patients of theirs like, but a lot of the pedis on the list require vaccines.  If you ask for the list they will give it to you but you guys have time.  We found whole child pediatrics through birthways.  Cheryl is a doula at the birthing center and she had a baby in December.  She using whole child and Christina said she really like them.  For the Bradley class we used Chantal Wiliford.  She holds classes at the birthing center on Thursday nights.  She talks about the bradley stuff but includes vaccine info (she's anti vaccination), cloth diapering, and breastfeeding info.  She's also super nice and very helpful.

Baby's fussing so I have to go but if I think of anything else I'll post it later.

  • Amanda, It is so good to have more mommy's with the same ideas!  I'm so happy to hear other stories like my own.  I have a consult with Christina on Monday.... I'm pretty sure we'll be using her.  I just have to meet her and make sure my husband and I feel comfortable, but I can't imagine being more comfortable in rush-you-in-and-out-don't-really-care-about-you-just-your-money doctors office.

Crystal, Thanks for all the great info!  You know I really didn't consider taking BF classes.... I have to admit i'm ignorant on the subject bc I just thought it just happens.  YIKES!  I will def take your advice!

  • Let us know how the consult goes on monday.

  • Beth,

I looked at your profile, and saw you're a chiropractor, that's so awesome! My dad is a chiropractor in Port Charlotte, just a little south of you,and I work for him. I thought that was a neat thing in common.

Keep us updated on your baby, I'll keep praying.

  • I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Christina!!!  I am 100% confident in her and the staff.  I was asking some REALLY tough questions and she didn't stutter or bat an eye!  She is very intelligent and very kind.... and that is a combo you hardly ever find.  I am so happy to have found Birthways and I couldn't be happier about my decision to have an all natural, birth center birth!  I am on cloud 9!

I am also so glad I have found these wonderful ladies here at theBump... you all are GREAT!

Amanda, that is so neat.  I would love to check out his office sometime.  I moved here for an associate position with a doc in the area and it did not work out so I am an independent contractor now and going at this on my own.  One thing I love about other chiros is the want to help the young and unexperienced and I would love to meet your dad.  I need all the advice I can get!

    Hey Beth,

I'm glad you likes Birthways, I love it there too. I was so happy to find a place like that, I was dreading a hospital birth.

I'm sure my dad would love to talk to you. He's been in practice for ten years.

How are you feeling? My morning sickness has been so bad this week, I can't wait to be out of 1st tri!

  • Sorry to hear you are so sick :-(  I get night sickness more often.  And now I have constant congestion, but i'm loving every second of it!!!  I just can't complain.  I feel as long as this little precious baby is making me miserable then all is GREAT!!

    When are you due?

  • Geez, Amanda!  I'm sorry.  I just saw you are due in Feb.  We're so close.  I'm having my next apt. with Christina on the 25th.  I'm kinda sad she sent me to a high risk doc because of my 2 previous miscarriages and I have a brain tumor.  I really hope they do not make me do the hospital thing, but I will do it if I need to for LO.  Anyway, excuse the pregnancy brain.....
