I need fresh ideas for things for my son to play with independently. What toys/items does your toddler really enjoy playing with? And I'm not referring to activities with you involved. With a newborn in the house I need more ideas of stuff my son can play with on his own. Thanks.
Re: Favorite toys for 2 year old?
puzzles!!! I have a huge puzzle queen on my hands. She does puzzles with the whole alphabet independently.
dr.kit. She will play doctor with her stuffed animals.
seek and find toddler activity books- where on the side of the page it gives you several things for the child to find
leggos/clippo blocks
melissa and doug have magnetic dolls (comes in boy versions too) that have outfits to dress the doll with. gisele loves these now.
as long as you don't have a 2 year old that puts things in his mouth- lacing beads. M&D have bigger beads. Gisele will sit there for a VERY long time and lace the beads in patterns.
Also- something to think about: not necessarily a toy- but very easy to put together a flip book of photos of the family/baby/him for him to look at. Gisele will look at photo albums FOREVER. I even have a slide show on my PC that she always asks to watch.

DD 7.11.09

These are Ben's current faves:
Legos/MegaBlocks
Trucks (any kind/size)
Dinosaurs
This LeapFrog Scribble and Write toy/game that my friend got him
Easy puzzles
Books - he loves to 'read'. Sometimes he wants me to read to him, but often, he'll sit for 20 minutes just flipping through books by himself.
Well none of these activities actually last more than about a 5-10 mins attention span of my 2 year old but here are some idea.
Playdough
Paint, paper, markers
train table!!!! This was the best investment we ever made. He spends the most time ever standing around that train table. You may just have to be close to help put the track back together when he takes it apart.
Cars. DS can play with matchbox cars for a long time.
Filling a large tupperware bin with dried beans/shapped pastas/sand, hiding little things inside, and then, giving her some tongs to search and pick out the things I hid was her favorite game! She would get so excited she would just start using her hands and beg me to bury them again and again.
She also LOVED when I would hide leftover Easter Eggs around the house for her to find, even with just a single marshmallow or jellybean or nothing inside.
Home-made playdoh and letting her use stamps in it is also totally awesome! They leave a much better imprint that using ink and paper and way less mess!
AquaDoodle is the best invention on the planet. Seriously, get one! We have the large 3' x 4' mat and she's still using it 2 years later.
I've said it 1,000x but making a water table with warm, soapy water, some sponges, different sized cups, a squirt bottle, etc. is still a favorite past time. A colander and funnel are also really fun! You can do this in the tub with just a few inches of water as well.
Good luck girl!!
