Hawaii Babies

first big accident

I took DS in our bedroom in the afternoon on Saturday and plopped him on the bed.  We played for a bit and then he sat up near the edge of the bed, so I went to move to that side (the end) and as I did, he rolled over to his tummy and took off for the other side of the bed!  And SPLAT he went off the side of the bed onto the hardwood floor, hitting his head on the molding (not much room b/t bed and wall there) on the way.

He has a cut about 1.5-2 inches long, but it wasn't really bleeding, so I just cleaned it up, but he cried for a good 10-15 minutes.  MH was napping downstairs and came up pretty quickly, so we were both trying to comfort him.

We kept a close eye on him for the rest of the day, watching for any signs that we needed to take him to the ER.  About 20 minutes later, he was just playing normally, but MH and I were both still having our hearts beat out of our chests!  I thought he was going to have a huge bruise, but it's barely there - does have a goose egg though!

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to deter him from wanting to crawl off the side of the bed again!

wish they would pick up on danger a little faster.  I use to think the amount of "safety/baby proof" items was overkill.  I still think some of it is, but I can see how it's so easy to want to protect the baby from everything.  Jack has taken to rolling, scooting, wiggling off his playmat and area rug and then rolls over and hits his head on the wood floor.  I keep putting more quilts down but realize I can't pad the entire house.  And once I padded the majority of the living room area he then would roll into the side of the wooded legs on the couch.  I wrapped a towel around that and then he found the bookcase. argh.

  • Oh no! I'm glad he's OK... It might be time to put a PnP in your bedroom so that you can set him in there and not on the bed.

Alexa did the same thing and fell off the bed around that age. I called the Dr just to be on the safe side and to my surprise, they asked me to bring her in! She checked out OK and they said that younger babies heads are still soft so they are less likely to sustain serious injuries from a fall than, say, a toddler or older child with a harder head. Interesting little fact.

Interesting.  It was a Saturday, so I knew I wouldn't get a response from my dr's office in a timely manner.  I'll call them now and see what they say.

I should have just had him on the floor, but we were playing.... and accidents happen.  He's on the floor from now on though!

Phew.  Just called them - they said as long as he isn't talking any differently, showing signs of any neurological issues, vomiting, etc that I don't need to bring him in.

I'm glad he's okay! Yeah, as long as he's not vomiting or acting strangely, then he'll be just fine =)

I'm sure he's fine! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to alarm you. I wouldn't have called except that DH thought I should. He tends to want to call more often than I do. At the least, talking to someone might make you feel better that he's OK. They sure get to the edge of the bed fast, huh? Lesson learned! :-)
