oh, Atlanta nesties, I met someone special today

You may not even know who I'm talking about, but you probably do.

My school district told us back in the spring that we had to attend a mandatory training today given by our regional education coop.  So, I've signed up and known all summer that I'm going to hear this Ron Clark guy speak.  No freaking clue who he was.  But, the name sounded familiar....

Duh!  When they showed the opening video of him and his background I knew immediately.  Had someone said "the Ron Clark Story", Matthew Perry, I would have known.  I haven't even seen that movie yet, but I added it to my blockbuster queue this afternoon.

He was so inspirational.  Next time I'm in Atlanta at my sister's I may consider visiting this school.  Where is it?  She lives in Ackworth/Cobb co off of the Red Top Mountain Road exit (or something like that).

  • I'm not familiar with his "story". What's the name of the school?

  • That is awesome.  He is an amazing guy.  Right up there with Johnathan Koozel (sp?) in my book.  Is the school he worked on in the ATL the science and math academy or is it another one?  Do you know the name?  Atlanta has some tremedously horrific schools and he has made a difference for some of those kids.  It isn't easy here.  There are only 3 elementary schools in the whole city that I would even let my kid walk into, much less go to.

You are more than welcome to visit me if you are in Atlanta.  Red Top Mountain is FAR from the city, but easily drivable.

  • The Ron Clark Academy.

I just found it online.  Looks like it's on Margaret Street in Atlanta, and he did say it is in a bad area, but i"m not familiar with Atlanta.  He took an old tent/awning warehouse and has turned it into this phenomenal school.  His career started in NC and then he chose to go to Harlem and work with low achieving kids who were performing way below grade level.

thanks joebunny.  I will remember that!

  • I don't know where his school is, I just wanted to say I live in Acworth.  We're about forty minutes from the city, but it's an easy day trip, and FWIW, Acworth is a fantastic place to live and Cobb County has great schools.

My nephews/neice love it there.  I'm not sure where they go to school, but they live off of Mars Hills Road.  The woman who cofounded his school was a Teacher of the Year, national award, I think, and she was teaching in Cobb county when she won that award.

We went shopping at one of the malls in Buckhead and I remember it taking less than an hour to get there, but again, I have no idea where that area of Atlanta is in reference to the rest of it.

Please do!  I am kind of tight with info on here, but I am really a pretty friendly sane, normal person, and I live near downtown Atlanta, but not in the "bad" area :-)

Google says it is 15 minutes from me.
