How early can the sex be determined?

Hello Everyone,

I was always told that you had to be 20 weeks to find out the sex of the baby...however I recently scheduled my 2nd ultrasound to have the "folds test" done, and many women I have talked to said this particular office can tell you the sex of the baby at 13 WEEKS! Especially if it is a boy. Does anyone out there have the same experience? How early did you find out?

Thanks for the insight!Smile

Re: How early can the sex be determined?

  • We found out at our anatomy scan which was dona at about 18 weeks.  I think 12 weeks is pretty early to tell with a sonogram, but I don't know for sure.

  • My doctor told me that you should wait until at least 16 weeks to start to determine the sex. If it's a boy, you can typically tell earlier, but she recommended we wait at least til week 16.

They determined my little one was a boy at 16 weeks and 5 days.

  • I was told to wait as close as possible to 20 weeks to find out the sex of the baby. At 19 weeks is when we had the appointment and our little lady wasn't showing the goods. Tech basically told us she wasn't completely sure. Then at 26 weeks I had another u/s for low laying placenta and then she showed the goods.

  • We found out at our n/t scan at 11 weeks, 6 days at GBMC...the tech said 90% sure it was a girl.  We found out for sure at 18 weeks during the anatomy scan that it was a girl and that is when we told everyone.  I had multiple scans after that for medical reasons and funny enough, I always asked them to tell me it was a girl.

I think next time, I won't let them tell us at the n/t scan as for like 6 weeks, it was like, maybe it's a girl, maybe it's not...but it seems like it is, but what if it's not....drove me a bit nutty waiting for the anatomy scan.

  • You can tell very early by Amnio, but the longer you wait the more accurate your results are projected to be. This site is great at explaining exactly why, as boys and girls look very very similar early in pregnancy.

Forgot to answer your second question. We have not found out, we will on birthday!

  • We found out at 18 weeks and she could easily tell it was a girl.

  • Thanks for the advice, you are right maybe until it is 100% sure I should wait so I am not going crazy for another 5 weeks:) it is so hard though...
  • I've heard the earliest is 16 weeks, but the longer you wait, say 20 weeks, the more accurate.  It seems like eternity, but the wait really isn't too bad.  No one took a guess for us until 20 weeks...he really showed his goods, so we knew for sure he was a boy.
  • They told us that their guess was a GIRL at the NT scan...and he is obviously a boy.  ;)  It was plain as day at the anatomy scan at 18 weeks though.  Although at each subsequent u/s, my DH would ask them to "make sure it is still a boy."

  • Im an OB sonographer and we do make GUESSES at nuchal time, which, if the sonographer knows the "theory" because its different than just looking between the legs at an anatomy and its not something they teach you in sono school......I wouldnt paint the room pink based on a 13 week suggestion.  You can see at 16 weeks pretty much, but still Id wait until your anatomy time because unfortunately, in a small amount of cases, kids can have "ambiguous genitalia" and well...thats a whole other thing LOL...I mean, if you think about it, theres a 50 50 chance of being right even not looking at the sono lol, so I wouldnt trust a 13 week guess
