Nanny search vent

We've decided to go the nanny route for when I go back to work.  DS1 is in a public special needs preschool, and it is impossible to find someone to watch him for a few hours in the afternoon.  So we decided to hire a nany to watch DS2 all day, and then DS1 in the afternoon.  We made an offer to a perfect person, and she accepted, and then backed out.  So now I am back to square 1, with less then 2 weeks before I go back to work.

I've posted on Craigs List and Sitter City, and have gotten a bunch of "applications" but only a few that I would really consider.  Most are along the lines of "I saw your ad and I'm interested.  Call me."  I have emailed a few people who have replied asking them for an interview, and they never write back.  WTF?!?!  Why bother applying in the first instance?!?!

So then I decided to explore the nanny agency route.  I submitted an on-line application to one and have never heard back.  DH even called today to see what was up, and no one returned his call.  WTF?!?!?

OK, back to trolling Craigs List.  If anyone knows of a nanny looking for work, please send him or her my way.

  • I have a friend who is a youth group leader, she might know of some of her former students who might be looking for that type of job....I will see if she knows anyone
  • Try DC Urban moms and Old Town Mom's list serves.  Old Town Mom's has a lot of really well connected folks, and DC Urban moms has not only a nanny site there but is a bit broader geographically.  Good Luck!

  • Hi there, I just emailed you :-)
  • I needed a short term nanny for 6 weeks before my LO's childcare spot opens the day after Labor Day and found a great one on DCurbanmom.com. I completely can relate to your frustrations though. I received many emails that were clearly generic and then were never followed up on after I took the time to write back.

  • I've had great luck with sittercity.com.  It's nice b/c you can take a look at their profile and qualifications before you decide whether to spend any more time on the candidate.
