TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

IUI girls...

I'm starting to look into what our next step will be if we're all clear on the HSG & Dr. Google says IUI + Clomid is typically the next step for unexplained infetility (which is where we currently stand).

Did you try drugs alone first?  What do you usually pay for IUI (our insurance company covers 0 on "procedures that facilitate a pregnancy"?  Any other insights?

Thanks loves!

Re: IUI girls...

  • IUI + comid would be the next step...unless if you have not done clomid with timed intercourse...which usually comes first.

Does your insurance at least cover the clomid?  I think all REs are different but I believe that my IUI was something like $250 - $300 but I am not certain.  You will also need to pay separately for the sperm wash as well...and I am not certain of the price on that at all.  I can double check if you would like when I get home.  Ours is covered by insurance however I have the pricing sheet that the RE gives us in my filing cabinet.

Hoping that you are able to move onto the next step to getting your LO.

  • Mine isn't unexplained fertility, so I'm not totally familiar with the steps.

However -- as far as IUI costs....one of the key things to find out is if the u/s required for monitoring the IUI would be considered "diagnostic" or "infertility".  For us, it was labled as diagnostic, so the only cost for the IUI was the actual IUI itself...which was ~$200 at my OB.  The u/s were all covered by insurance.  I've seen it both ways on this board, but maybe its something you could clarify with your doctor and insurance company.

  • We did three rounds of Clomid + TI before going to Clomid + IUI (which we also did three rounds of).  My RE does back to back IUI's so two days in a row of inseminations which brought the total to around $1,000 per try including the sperm wash and everything.  It would have been about half that if we decided to skip the second insemination but we wanted to do everything we could.

GL to you with whatever your next steps are!

  • We went straight to Clomid + IUI.  I took the generic Clomid and my co-pay was $0.  My IUI was $455 for sperm washing and insemination.  My insurance did include all of the u/s and b/w so definitely be sure to check on that part because you will probably go on CD3 and again around CD11 for both.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Good luck!

  • Thanks girls, this is all very helpful!  We'll see what the RE says after the HSG.  I'm getting a bit ahead of myself, but I like to be prepared Wink

  • It could be drugs as a next step. I think it all depends on what comes out in the testing that they do. Check with your insurance to see if they cover any IF. I did and discovered that they cover IUI. GL! IMO, RE's are better than OBs.

I called today & they don't cover any IUI or IVF...at all.  But I think they will cover the monitoring if it's labeled "diagnostic".  The wording was something like "testing for infertility & treatment of cause, but nothing that would facilitate a pregnancy".

  • We have fertility coverage but suprisingly our Dr's office doesn't charge much for out of pocket. The clomid is $19.95 at my pharmacy. The sperm wash is $185, and the insemination is $100. Our insurance will cover the ultrasounds and insemination. We just have to pay for the wash.

I was supposed to do my first IUI today but we missed the window. We will try for it next month.

  • Some RE's will prescribe just clomid, to see how you respond, before automatically ordering an IUI.  I was put on clomid to increase my progesterone (drs like to see it above 10 on a non medicated cycle and above 15 on a medicated cycle).  My first cycle on clomid was 50mg, and while it increased my progesterone, it wasn't quite as high as the dr would have liked.  So, the next cycle I did 100mg, but also had a post-coital test done around CD12 to see if I had any cm and if the sperm were swimming.  A big side effect of clomid is little/no ewcm, and sure enough, I had none, and DH's swimmers weren't moving.  But, my lining and follie size looked good, so we did an IUI that cycle.  BFN so my dr suggested a lap/hyst, and removed endo and polyps.  That next cycle I did 100mg of clomid and IUI again, BFP!  Unfortunately, ended in m/c, but as soon as I get AF, we'll be picking up where we left off, with 100mg clomid/IUI.  IUI is very common with clomid because clomid dries out the cm and doesn't give the sperm anything to swim in.  With an IUI, the sperm are placed directly in to the uterus, bypassing the cervix.

Are you seeing an RE?  If not, I highly recommend that you do, before starting any medications or procedures.

We don't have any fertility med/procedure coverage either.  I pay $9 per 50mg of clomid, through Giant Eagle's generic drug program.  $44 for ovidrel (trigger shot).  $275 for IUI, which includes my monitoring and DH's sperm washing.

I'm on the Trouble TTC board all the time, tons of great advice and knowledge over there.  Check it out if you have any other questions!

  • we did femara on it's own before moving onto IUI w/meds. I then went straight to IUI with injectibles. Thankfully IUI here is covered I just pay $20 copay for each ultrasound and the procedure itself (on average $100 for the round) and the copays for the meds (mine are $50 for the gonal F for whole cycle and $50 for ovidrel). I don't pay for bloodwork.
m/c#1 07/16/08 (11 weeks), m/c#2 10/10/08 (8 weeks). and then nothing since except every test possible (no answers). IUI#1 and #2: BFNs Super lucky to be buddies with Peetie. Our out of nowhere, surprise DD born 5/29/2011
  • I know I didn't post this question, but I want to thank you for the great information.

  • I tried a few rounds of clomid (unmonitored) and TI while I was with my previous Obgyn. Once I went to the RE, we moved to Femara (with u/s on CD11) + HCG trigger + IUI. Since I responded well the first two times, we did not move to injectables. However, this last cycle wasn't too great.

My IUIs are covered (up to 6) through insurance, but I do have copays, which amount to about $120 for each attempt.

For the IUI itself (about $500):

IUI was $220, sperm wash was $150, weekend appointment was $37, the office visit was $87

The monitoring  appointments can get pricey, as each ultrasound runs about $300-$350

Then there is the drugs. I had a $35 co pay for the femara.

So all in all, IUIs with oral drugs would cost me (if I didn't have insurance) about $1200. It would be much more than this if I was doing injectables, as I would need closer monitoring.

We went straight to meds and IUI but honestly I wished I'd asked to try meds alone first.  My RE will only do three IUIs and then he recommends IVF as the next step - I'm old though :(

My insurance won't pay a dime and my RE's office won't try to hide the billing as diagnostic.  I pay about $400 for the CD3 visit which is an ultrasound and visit with the nurse who gives me a prescription for Femara (which costs $170 OOP) Then I have a follice check on CD11 - that's about $250 and then if I do the trigger shot ( $90 OOP) they do IUIs on two days at $550 each including the sperm wash.  If I catch my LH surge they only do one IUI.

Good luck - I hope you it works for you!
