I brought DD into the pedi's office today because we have been struggling so muchwith her feedings and we were worried about her weight gain.We thought that with her going on zantac that her reflux would get better and she wouldn't struggle so much when eating. Well her food intake has not improved. She is fed breastmilk from a bottle. She has been eating only about1-1.5 ounces at a time and gets only around 17 ounces a day. This was from her 2-2.5 ounces before. Much to my relief she is on track with her weight gain andis not at all dehydrated and she has enough poop and wet diapers. She seems so little though. The doctor was happy with her weight.Poor baby had to have a rectal exam to see if there was any other issues. She has microscopic blood in her poop. Not too much but enough to show up on the test. So I have to take out dairy for two weeks to see if her feeding improves. The pedi also suggested changing out the nipples to a medium flow to see maybe if she is just frustrated. I'm hoping this works. We have been having a lot of rough days and sleepless nights. I find myself constantly crying because I can't console her. It makes me feel like such crap because I'm her mother and there is nothing I can do.
Re: Going dairy free for 2 weeks :(
Jacquie, give yourself a break. You are new to this and trying to figure it all out. You are a great mother!
As for dairy, I had to cut it too because of blood. Just to warn you, you'll probably have to stay off of it if you continue to breastfeed. It's not that bad though. In order to keep up supply, be ready to eat lots of meat and get in some good fats wherever you can. I eat like an avocado a day. And drink tons and tons of water.
I hope this helps! You'll get past the crying phase too.
Thank you Loves, I'm looking forward to her feeling better and being a happier baby.
Thank you for the advice. I love avocado and that would be a great way to get in some fats. I will probably struggle with my love for cream sauces. I'm worried about having to continue to cut out dairy as soon as she talked to me about it. I have a freezer full of breastmilk. It would be such a waste.
You are doing everything you can sweetheart. Please don't beat yourself up.

I know, I was so overwhelmed at first and I still get pretty bummed when I see people eating yummy desserts that I can't have.
But I'd do anything for DS, so it's not a big deal. And don't trash the stash just yet. You may end up being able to give it her later. I just wanted to warn you that 2 weeks is likely going to run into months. I was under the impression that if DS was fine, I could try it again, but his pedi said no. So I have to continue on it until he's at least 8 months, at which point we can try dairy again.
I'll be sure to keep it until it goes bad. Thank you again Loves!
