carseats here are so friggin flimsy!!!!!!
We just got to nafpaktos yesterday and picked up our rental car today. They didn't have an infant, rear-facing carseat so I had to go buy one...
Now I'm not understanding why they're so lightweight and only one type comes with a base. Are the safety standards here just that much more relaxed? I mean, these carseats are nothing like what we know carseats to be! Even the carseat on the other island was a POS in my opinion. I *** about our Gracco for being heavy, but my goodness, is it 100xs more sturdy than the ones I've seen here!
Barbara, Hanneke? Maybe you guys could offer some insight since you're out of the US?
Re: I wanna know why...
butting in:: Mexico has the same cheapass type of carseats. There are no carseat laws in Mexico. My SIL's didn't have carseats for their LO's after they outgrew their carriers. I think that since there arent such strict CS laws, and people use their car less, there isn't a need for such heavy duty car seats. Just my .02.
Sorry.
Also, how is the situation with the mosquitoes?
Ya see, lib, that's what I thought! I figured people with babies that are so little are still not traveling all over with them... I mean, even our Greek friends in NY won't take a baby out of the house before 40 days!!
As far as the mosquitos go, I'm good now - nafpaktos doesn't have swarms of them like corfu did. I tried the vinegar and it definitely worked to keep the itch away on the bites i had, but it didn't prevent them from coming at me like crazy... i seriously think i must produce a hormone that attracts them or something...

In Holland you're required to get a rear-facing car seat for baby's upto 9 months, then you can switch to a front-facing car seat.
We have a MaxiCosi CabrioFix for Sam, with is heavy & sturdy. We don't have a base, we just use the seatbelt, but thats b/c our car doesn't have the iron fix-thingies to put the base on.
I don't know about Greece though....maybe they are more relaxed there?
