Dibs on a nickname (initials)?

I think I'm just in a venting mood so don't feel like you have to read or comment.

Ok I've never been a fan of friends calling dibs on names...but I'll go with it for first names and can understand that frustration. But what about nn's? My last name starts with J and I fell in love with the first name Malcolm and am naming my son this. I was talking to a friend who when she has a son wants to name him Mason James so he can have the nickname MJ. When I told her the name we're using she got butt hurt that I could possibly use the nn MJ. She asked why I even considered M names for my son. So if you claim dibs on a nn, does that mean that letter is off limits to me?? I don't have any potential nn's for my son but this is an obvious one that DH or others might give him.

Re: Dibs on a nickname (initials)?

  • I would tell your "friend" to get the F over it honestly...names are names and anyone can use them no one has claims to a name if that were the case there would be a LOT of problems in the world with people fighting over who has what claim to what name.....this kind of thing is ridiculous, I feel bad for you having to deal with such nonsense.

  • You can't call dibs on an initial - that's just crazy!  Who knows what nn your son will end up with, if any!  So, no, she can't do that.  End of story.
  • No one has dibs on names or nick names. If you have a sensitive situation like the poster did yesterday with a baby who died, then you have an argument. But unless the baby is born, is a boy and has Mason or Malcolm on the birth certificate, the argument is kind of pointless.

  • I don't believe in claiming names, so I certainly don't believe in claiming a whole letter! Even if I did, real babies get first pick over hypothetical babies. That said, if you wanted to go along with her wishes (which you are under no obligation to do) I'm sure there are other nicknames that you could come up with.
  • I think it is extremely rude of her to say that you can't use any M names.

If I read your post correctly she isn't even expecting a son yet.  What if she never has a son and you didn't use the name you like, you will likely regret it.

She really needs to get over herself, and you should use the name Malcom.

  • Gee friend, don't get offended. I know cousins Cade and Cadence, cousins Jason and Jason, my BFF and I have kids AJ and RJ. What about George Foreman's kids, etc. Friend, calm down. There are no dibs on ANY names. If you like it, you can still use it.
  • Are you eight? Because this entire post sounds like it was written by an eight-year-old, albeit a very literate one. I can't even think of a logical response it's so ridiculous.

Yes you are correct, this would be for her phantom son.

Thanks for the comments! I guess I was in a really annoyed mood and just needed to vent. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that thinks this is all ridiculous. And trust me...the conversation with her felt like we were 8. And yes I am still naming my son Malcolm!

  • This is a convo for 8 year olds. Do not engage.
  • I call the letter K!

You can have it - I'll take E though. Wait...that didn't sound right.

    lol no kidding

  • Your friend is being ridiculous.
fraternal twin boys born january 2009
  • That is ridiculous.  So she expects that everyone she knows will not name any of their children with the same she used or plans to use for one of hers. Totally immature.  That is all.
