Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Non-clicky Poll: Solids/Cereal

It feels like there are a ton of LO's already starting cereal and solids on here. I had planned on waiting until the 6 mo. mark. So, when did you start LO on cereal and/or solids and what made you start when you did? Also does cereal count as "giving LO solids" or are they separate?

Re: Non-clicky Poll: Solids/Cereal

  • Cereal counts as a solid.  Anything other than breast milk/formula is a solid.  We've given a little food, but aren't going to do it daily until 6 months.

  • We started just before 4 months based on our pedi's recommendation. DS is a very big boy and was drinking an insane amount of formula to try to be full. We knew he was ready when he figured out how to eat off a spoon within matter of days. Needless to say, he's now a full baby. I really think it depends on the baby.
  • Cereal is solids.

I started DD1 at four months because she was showing signs that she was ready. I'd planned on waiting until six months, but then I decided to follow her cues -- and she was definitely ready at four months.

I'm waiting for DD2 to show that she's ready, but she's not there yet. I'm pretty sure she still has her tongue-thrust reflex, and while she's somewhat interested in watching us eat, she isn't grabbing at our food or showing the level of interest that my DD1 was at this age. So we'll just keep on with EBFing and see how things go.

  • We are waiting until 6 months.  DS is off the charts at 23 lb and 29" but we are lucky that our pedi does not subscribe to the OWT that big babies need more than just formula or BM.
  • We started DS #1 on it at 4 months because he had severe reflux and cereals helped to control the spitting up.  We got the ok today at #2's 4 month appt to start cereals for the same reason.  My pedi said anytime between 4-6 months is fine depending on the baby.

  • This is on my list of questions to ask our pedi at our 4 mo appointment.  DS is a big boy and yet he really doesn't eat much more than an average-sized child his age would.  "Others" around us keep insisting that he's probably at least ready to start cereal, "because he's so big," but I don't agree.  He just doesn't seem like he's extra hungry or anything so I think their claims are unfounded.

    I love your pedi!

I just have to say, the difference in Carter between 4 months and 5 months in those pics is so funny!!  OMG he looks like a different baby, so much bigger and more mature!!  But he's super super cute, I love his pics.

  • We started DD on cereal when she was 3months.  Pedi recommended we start at 2mo for reflux but I wasn't comfortable with this.  I wanted to EBF her as long as possible.  She was eating cereal off of the spoon in a matter of days!  We started Stage 1 Veggies after her 4 month appointment.  We've rolled through carrots, peas and sweet potatoes.  Next on the menu:  Green Beans :)  Next week, I'll introduce fruit.  FYI:  I only feed her food with her cereal at night after I BF her.  This allows her to sleep all night and I benefit too!!!!!!  The rest of the day she gets BM. Oh I forgot to mention, I did give her White Grape juice this past weekend...2oz.  She loved it.  I will only give her that as a 'treat'.
  • We just got the go ahead from our pedi to start DD on rice cereal at her 4 mo appt.  We didn't even have to ask.  He told us to start.  That being said, he doesn't always make that recommendation.  A friend takes her DD to the same pedi and she was told to wait a month or so before starting cereal.  That was based on the amount of formula she was taking in at each feeding.

  • I wanted to wait until 6 months, but we started cereal at 4.5 months based on a rec from our pedi to try to stop DS's insane amount of spitting up every day.  I don't really see much of a difference yet in the spit up and I know it is an OWT, but he is sleeping so much better.

  • We started at around 4 months 1 week.  DS really shows interest in our food and seemed like he was ready.  He has eaten like a champ since day one.  We do cereal every night before bed.

  • I started giving DD single grain cereal later in the day after her 4 month appointment (7/16) because her pediatrician recommended it because he didn't want to see her iron levels drop. I usually give it to her once a day, the pedi said to start whole grain cereal on about the 30th of this month, then green veggies 2 weeks after that, yellow veggies two weeks after that and regular/any baby food two weeks after that but to space it out 1-2 weeks in between so that if she gets an allergic reaction we'll know which food it was mast likely from. Having a BIL that I've helped raise since he was a teeny baby I already knew to do that because the poor kid is allergic to corn, wheat, soy, milk, eggs, nuts and dogs...and he has a non-biological brother with the same allergies.
  • I really wanted to wait until 6 months, but DH has been pushing to try.  We got the green light from the pedi on Monday to go ahead, but were told it didn't matter when we started between now and 6 months.  Cereal does count as a "solid" even though initially, it's just a slightly thicker consistency than your formula or BM that you mix it in.  We tried today, and it was a  big fat fail.  DD just made funny faces and then turned her head away.  I'm going to wait another week before trying again.  I'm secretly hoping that she keeps rejecting it for a few more weeks.

ETA: The only reason I went ahead with the trial, despite my own wishes is because of DD's seeming readiness.  She's been very interested in our food and has been reaching for it.  I think she's probably ready, but today wasn't the day.
