I have paragard. It's like mirena, but has no hormones. I love it and have had no side effects (other than some cramping and bleeding for a couple hours immediately after getting it put it). I plan on having it until we are ready for #2 and will definitely get one again after #2. I love not having to remember to do anything.
I have had mirena for 6 weeks now. The only side effect I have is spotting. The spotting is annoying, so I'm hoping it stops soon. Other than that, I haven't had any problems.
i HAD mirena for 6 weeks...note the word HAD (6/2/10-7/14/10). I never stopped spotting, i got severe cramps that radiated down my left leg, gained 10lbs and was hungry all the time, had headaches every night. I got it taken out, spotted for a couple more days, started the pill on Sunday and haven't bled since Saturday. I feel SO much better already and its only been 6 days!
My sister, on the other hand, never spotted at all and has had no adverse side effects, as is the story with everyone else I've talked to. Hopefully you will have a wonderful experience as well! Good luck

I've heard so many horror stories about it. But I've actually had an okay experience. I got it when my LO was 8 weeks old. I spotted for about a week and that was it. I haven't had a period, or anything since. I also lost a large amount of hair, but then again, that's pretty common even for women without the IUD. Once and a while I will get a tinge of cramping. So hopefully you will have a pleasant experience as well.
I got it, not knowing all the horror stories aside from irregular spotting for the first two to three months. Then I read the horror stories, freaked out, but then calmed down because I really haven't experienced anything yet. I've been working out super regularly ever since and have lost about a pound a week, my hair seems fine, my appetite hasn't changed, my sex drive is low but it was before the Mirena due to BFing (and I still just get off my duff and do it, because I always enjoy it once it starts!), and I'm not experiencing any weird mood swings or anything.
I AM still spotting but technically I have to wait til September for it to be excessive, since that will be the three month mark. And hey, I didn't bleed for nearly a year, I guess I have it coming to me, haha.
But if any negative effects appear or worsen, then I am going to get it removed and switch to the pill when I stop BFing.
I have it and so far so good. I am still spotting, its been 8 weeks which is really annoying, but other than that no issues. My hair is falling out like crazy but that doesn't have anything to do with the IUD, that is just my hormones after giving birth.
Re: mirena side effects?
Stroke.
Seriously, stay away. Not worth it!! I had a heck of a recovery with an 11 week old at the same time.
ETA - If you're set on an IUD, PLEASE get Paragard -no risk of stroke!
zero sex drive. cuts from the "threads" that are really like wires. irregular spotting.
I'm really not a huge fan and will be getting it removed as soon as i;m done BFing.
