Park Questions...

1) Every park that I go to - And they're in very good areas - Has teenagers making out on the swings or early 20's sitting around, obviously up to no good, on the picnic benches.  Does everyone else encounter this at your parks or is it just a trashy California thing?

2) Which swing is the right one for an infant?  The little bucket-style or the weird, molded plastic, car-seat shaped looking one?  And how does that one work?

Thank you!

I don't frequent local parks here because it's just too hot but I do remember seeing these things when I was in my 20's and would take my dog to the park during the summer when I lived in a cooler place.  It's summertime and the kids are out of school so they have to make out somewhere I guess LOL!  That does suck because it make you feel weird when it's really them!

  • I don't have that problem.  The teens typically stick to the basketball courts.  There are some picnic tables over by them and those are usually reserved by them.

I don't like the bucket ones, but the parks around here don't have the car seat looking ones.  My daughter tries to climb out.  The bucket ones work well if I have another toddler with me and put them back to back.  I think it might just be my toddler, because I've seen plenty of one year olds swinging in the bucket swings without trying to push forward and tip out or trying to climb out.

Thank you... took this pic yesterday.... I love it!

The bucket seat seemed easy but I wanted to make sure I wasn't "doing it wrong"!  Thx

  • no teens at the parks here...

Bucket swings are better. At that age i put a blanket or towel behind him to keep him propped up.

  • I haven't really encountered that with the parks. And I live in trashy Oklahoma. ;)

If they have the swings that are like a carseat, those are best. I couldn't put Alaina in the other baby swings until about a year - they need to be sitting up and be able to hold on.

  • I think in all of the times that I've taken Ben to the many parks in our area, I have only encountered teenagers hanging out on the equipment once.  They were smoking too.  I very nicely reminded them that this was a place for small children and said that I would greatly appreciate it if they would move away from the area so that the kids could have access to the play equipment and would not have to smell their cigarette smoke.  They said sure and went over into the adjoining baseball field, a few hundred yards away.

When Ben was smaller, I always put him in the black bucket type swings and he loved them.  As a toddler, he now hates them.  But loves the slides - the higher, the better.  Go figure.

  • I didn't know you're in CA too.  North or South?  I'm in the bay area.

And yes we have adolescents who hang out at our playground.  They don't make out but they do sit on the equipment which is mildly annoying.  I don't say anything but would like to.  :)

Wow - which part of the bay are you in?  I live in Fresno now but grew up in Castro Valley, if you know where that is.  My Mom, sister, etc. all live up there still.

Small world... we're 10 minutes from Castro Valley.  In Dublin.  :)  I grew up in Ventura though and went to Cal Poly SLO, so I'm a California native too!

Wow - Definitely a small world - I spent much of my youth hanging out at the Cineplex in Dublin.  lol

    Too bad you're not closer!

The only ones we have at our parks are the bucket style. DS loves them!

    Thank you!

  • I'm in California and I have never seen that in a park.  It's usually full of moms and little kids.  Maybe it's the time of the day that you go?
  • I'm in Southern Cali, though.  I just noticed that your farther north.
