Hospital items

I have a ton of lists going for baby when we get the call and one is "items to take to the hospital", so far I have: swaddlers, hats, bottles, pacifier, burp cloths. The hospital will supply diapers and formula correct? What else?

Re: Hospital items

  • You shouldn't need bottles in the hospital. The formula is in ready to feed containers. The hospital should also give you a little to go home with.  They also have pacifiers so as long as you like that kind your baby wont need any in the hospital either. The hospital had white tshirts for the baby but if you care about them having something special bring outfits. You will need a going home outfit. You may also want to bring an empty shoppting bag to hold hospital keepsakes unless BM is keeping them.

  • If you are talking about things to take to the hospital, and not to the hotel room (if you are traveling) then you need to worry  more about things for you and DH than the baby.

Everything you list above will be provided by the hospital.  You should take a couple of blankets for coming home, a coming home outfit and a hat if you want a cuter hat than the hospital provides.  You might want a couple of burp cloths for the ride home.  Really though, you should be set with what the hospital gives you.

If you plan to stay in the hospital, then plan to take your own pillows, bath towels (BM's hospital towels were the size of hand towels), slippers, snacks, vending machine money, things to do in case you don't get as much hospital time with LO as you are expecting, camera, etc.

  • Thanks ladies! I guess I will worry more about DH and I. :)

We most likely won't be traveling as we live right on the state line (agency is only licensed in two states) and most of the BM's are within 30 miles of us.

  • This may not be what you are looking for, but an infant seat. The baby cannot leave the hospital without one properly installed in your vehicle.

  • The hospital gave us a lot - diapers, formula in pre-mixed bottles, a couple shirts, blankets, and a hat.

I would pack a coming home outfit, but you probably won't need too much else.  Maybe a burp cloth for in the car.

Don't forget your camera, your batteries/charger, your phone/charger, and phone list of people you want to call so you don't forget anyone.

We live about 2 hours from the hospital DD was born in - we stayed in a hotel room that night, and she came home the next morning.  We are SO glad we did this --- we were exhausted (happily exhausted) after the day of being in the hospital and we were so glad we didn't have to drive home.  If this could be the case for you, scout out the area and have a couple hotels in mind that are close to the hospital.

  • I brought a tun of things with me only to realize all I needed they supplied. I did leave him in the outfits they had only because they were so convient. I had his special going home outfit and blanket that I brought up just before we left. They also had the cutest hat for him. It was knited and blue. Not one of those that are pink, blue, and white.

Just like others have said focus on what you and dh need.

  • A soft nail file or little mittens. Our daughter was born with long nails.  The hospital wouldn't file them and we didn't bring anything.  Poor little R scratched up her face a lot in the first few days!
