How can I get DD to use a sippy?

I have bought every sippy known to man, soft spout, hard spout, with handles, without handles, straw cups. She wont use them. Turns her head, throws them like they are toys. How can I get her to use one? Should I just leave it out near her all the time so she can play with it/experiment at her leisure and eventually she will drink? I have given her juice boxes and squeezed so she gets juice so I think she may be able to get the straw cup.....any ideas? What did you do? Thanks!

  • Have you tried putting juice in the sippy cup?  We started with water and DS had zero interest.  Like you we bought tons of cups and all he would do is throw them and scream when we tried him to drink from it.  We recently added water downed juice and he took to it like a pro.  He now does much better with it.

I have tried watered down juice in it...doesnt matter...LOL. She takes water with a splash of juice in her bottle so I guess no motivation there. She also wont even hold her bottle for me (but she holds it at the sitters) I just have a very stubborn child who wants me to do everything for her. The sitter is trying to offer her a sippy to. My sitter told me she lefft DD with a sippy one day and when she came back in the room DD was drinking it, but threw it down as soon as she saw the sitter. Its like she doesnt want us to know she can do things b/c she wants us to do it for her.

  • DD always wants to drink what I am drinking especially when I am holding her. Maybe you could use that technique? We did it with just a normal cup (me holding) and then a straw-cup like from McDonalds or Starbucks. I would put water in it and let her "drink what I'm drinking". So, you could then use the straw sippy and you drink out of it (or act like it) and then offer it to her casually or let her take it out of your hands and try.

Don't push the issue. I give it to her and tell her whats in it (water or milk) but if she rejects it then we leave it at that.

Also, you might wanna try it w/o the valves at first. That way the liquid just flows right out and they get that positive reinforcement faster than having to suck.

I could have written this word for word. DD finally started using the Tilty cup. I don't think with the other cups she was getting that she had to tip her head way back. She still prefers me to hold it for her, but if I leave it in the cupholder of the stroller she will pick it up and drink away.

  • I was having a tough time with this, too. A couple weeks ago, I was in Williams-Sonoma and found a Beaba sippy cup that transitions from nipple to spout to cup, but it has two handles to get him used to the idea of using a cup. DS has been taking the cup easily with the nipple on it. It might work for your LO, too. :)
