If we have a girl, we'd like to name her after both of our mothers. His mother's name was Rebecca and my mother's name is Sarah, though she has always gone by Sally. Does Sarah Rebecca sound too awkward with the multiple Rs? We would call her Sally, not Sarah. Should we just name her Sally Rebecca?
If we have a boy, our top choices are Basil Theodore and Miles Theodore. Neither of the first names are family names, but Theodore is. I'm pretty sure Basil won't be very well liked, but figured I'd throw it out to see if there are any surprises.
Re: Team Green name help
Definitely name her Sally Rebecca. Naming someone Sarah but calling her Sally makes just about as much sense as driving around the block to get to your next door neighbor's house.
I don't hate Basil but I like Miles better.

Sally is a nickname for Sarah. It can be a stand-alone name too, but part of me feels a little strange about it, since it's always been a nickname in my family. To me, it's like giving the first name Nick instead of Nicholas.
I was so hung up on the Rs that I didn't even notice the -uh sound at the end of both names. Thanks for the feedback!
I like Sarah Rebecca and calling her Sally. But I love quirky name situations...my dad's name is Thomas Vincent and he goes by Jay. It's a great family story on why and I love telling it. So i think it's nice to have your daughter do what your mother did with her name.
As for the boy names, I actually know a Basil! He's a grown man, but that is the only time I have ever heard of the name. I think it's very original. Miles is a cool name too, but it is becoming very popular. It was ranked 162 last year by the SSA. Both are great names, but I think Basil sounds better with Theodore...Basil Theodore. Very cool name.
I like Sarah Rebecca w/ nn Sally. I think (no, I hope!) most English-speaking people know that Sally is a nickname for Sarah and has been for hundreds of years. Sally is adorable on a little girl and fun for family and friends, but I think it's a good idea to give the formal name, rather than making the nickname the legal name. I don't agree with the "name her what you will call her" argument ? a name will have so many other uses besides "what my mother calls me" over the course of a person's life.
I like both Miles and Basil. Would you want Basil to be pronounced BAH-zil, BAY-sil, or BAA-zil? I think you might get all three from time to time, depending on where you are. Miles won't have those pronunciation issues, but that's a minor thing. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I did not know this! I don't protest it, though. It's cute. I also think Sarah is a beautiful name. Whatever she goes by, formal or nn, win/win
If you're going to call her Sally, name her Sally. It sounds better with Rebecca too. Just a curious question though, won't it be confusing to have Grandma Sally and Sally, the baby? From the way you wrote your post, it looks like his mother has passed. I think it would make more sense to name her Rebecca Sally so she won't have the same name as one of her living grandmothers.
Miles Theodore is very nice. Really don't like Basil. I don't think that would grow up well on a boy.
The only pronunciation I've heard for Basil as a name is BAH-zil, but you're right. I imagine there will be plenty of people who pronounce it like the herb.
You're right, my mother-in-law passed away when my husband was young. We don't like any of the nicknames for Rebecca (Becky, Becca, Reba) and though Rebecca is a lovely name, we don't like it well enough to say it multiple times a day for the rest of our lives. When we visit my family, the only person who calls my mother by her name is my stepdad. To the rest of us, she's Mom or Yia Yia (Greek for grandmother). My mom is estranged from the rest of her family, so our family gatherings are small, with immediate family only. I don't anticipate the duplicate name will be a serious problem. Good eye, though. Thank you!
Sally Rebecca especially since that's what you are going to call her. Every Sarah I know goes by Sarah and every Sally I know has the given name Sally. Personally I think Sarah is much prettier than Sally but if you will never call her Sarah, name her Sally. Rebecca is beautiful.
I think Sarah is a beautiful name. I dislike Sally, I'm sorry. I would definitely call her Sarah to both give her the more formal name and give her the option of going by Sarah if she hates Sally. Sarah Rebecca sounds fine; a lot better than Sally Rebecca, imo.
I prefer Miles over Basil.
If you are going to only call her Sally, name her Sally. I never understand this... That being said Sarah Rebecca doesn't sound bad at all. It is a very pretty name.
I am not sure there is a nice way of saying this but basil is freaking herb. Not a name... I use it when cooking all the time. If someone told me they named their child basil, I am really not sure I could keep a straight face. I hate a lot of names, but that is just the silliest thing I've heard in a long time.
Miles is a very cute name. Not masculine at all, but a nice name none-the-less.
It's okay, you don't have to be nice. Basil is both an herb and a very old name. The name is pronounced BAA-zil. (I mistyped my previous post about pronunciation.) The most well known Basil in modern times was probably the actor Basil Rathbone or, fictionally, Basil Fawlty, the main character in Fawlty Towers. It's certainly not a common name, but it is a name.
