Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How much do you want to bet she broke her own water?

Another chapter in the saga of my cousin's pregnancy.

Back in the tri days my husband's family encouraged me to break my own water, because somebody's somebody was an EMT and they did it for somebody else. Some crap like that. Obviously, since I'm a real smart cookie, I didn't!

Well, my ridiculous AW cousin (in law) "went into" labor this morning because her water broke. 39 weeks, dilated to a 2. I'm giving her the side-eye hard, because even though I KNOW it can happen, I also know what advice was given to me at the end of my pregnancy. My cousin isn't exactly the brightest crayon in the box, if you know what I mean.

Either way, baby is on his way... And so begins the next chapter in what is looking to be a long, long story.

  • I was at 2, 3 hours after my water broke. Ella was even 11 days early.

  • I was 9.5cm and the doc had to break my water for me. I was kind of disappointed it never broke on its own, but oh well.

    Liar!

Just kidding! :) I know it happens. I'm just not so sure about *this* situation.

  • That is TERRIBLE advise to give someone and you would have to be an idiot to actually take that advice. There is a reason that stuff is handled by medical professionals.
  • my water broke at 35 weeks 5 days and i was 2cm when i got to the hospital.
  • How exactly does someone safely break their own water?? Like safely enough that an EMT thought it was a great idea to give anyone that advice??
  • Sounds incredible but my water "broke" ( I had a slow leak) at 39 weeks 1 day...and I was only 1 cm. After 24 hours of labor and still at a 3 cm...they brought on the pitocin. It stinks but it does happen.....although from what you have said about this relative before-your are probably right that she got our her darning needle!
  • I hate you all.

I walked around at 5 cm before I went into labor. Got to the hospital at a 7 and my OB broke my water for me.

    Jealous!

This is a test. This is only a test.
  • it definately can happen, I was two weeks early when my water broke, I don't think I was even 2cm when they measured when I got to the hospital 2 hours later... hopefully she didn't break it - bad advice from the family for suggesting breaking her water

  • All this talk of water breaking is foreign to me... I never dialated beyond a finger tip and there was certainly no water breaking LOL. Hence the c-section.
  • im jealous too! i was walking around at 4 and my water never broke either..
  • I went into labor and was in active labor for 10 hours and my water broke, we headed to the hospital and come to find out I was only at a 2 as well.

  • My water broke at 37w3d, and I was only at 1cm.  It absolutely can happen that way - although given the road it took me down (24 hours, no progress, then that lovely pitocin, for a 38 hour marathon labor), I'd much prefer it had stayed unbroken!

Anyone who breaks their own water is a moron.

  • I agree something seems fishy b/c of the advice you were given, but my water broke and I was 'barely a finger tip' dialated.  I do think I am the anomaly here.  And it's nothing to envy; 36 hours of pitocin induced labor, then a c-section b/c my body clearly was not ready to go into labor!  At least you will have many juicy stories to come!
If being a math nerd is wrong, I don't wanna be right!
  • The situation does sound a little suspicious given the background info, but my water broke at home and I found out I was only 2 cm when I got to the hospital.  I didn't even know I was in labor until my water broke - no signs of labor, no noticeable drop, no contractions (at least none that I could feel - I could see them on the monitor for several hours at the hospital before I could feel them).
  • I walked around for three weeks at 2 1/2. water never broke, got to hospital at 4cm, dr broke my water at 8cm an hour later. DD came two hours after that. She was five days early
  • Just wanted to say that for those of us whose water broke on it's own, early, with very little to no dialation it doesn't always mean hours and hours of pitocin etc. My water broke at 36 weeks, they didn't even check how dialated I was because I wasn't having contractions yet. 6 hours after my water broke I was in active labor and 4 hours later my son was born. No interventions or anything. So, it can happen, and it can happen without being long and painful. However, I agree that this situation is suspicious.

    i remember that ahahahaha

  • Lots of people have their water break at 1, or not even dialated. And she was full term. My water broke at 3cm and 39 weeks. I didn't even have contractions for 2 hours.

That said, you know this girl and we don't, so you would know better than we would. But how do you break your own water?

  • Ugh... I hope your cousin isn't that stupid, but based on prior stories.... My water was broken by my OB while I was in labor at about 4cm.  I walked around dilated to 2cm from 37 weeks until I delivered at 39w4d.

    OMG, seriously?

  • my water broke at 5am, after walking lots since i was having NO contractions my midwife did an internal at 9am and I was maybe a 1/2cm... I delivered him 24 hours later.
  • I'm confused as to how this is damning evidence. She was dilated and full term. Hopefully she wasn't dumb enough to break her own water, but I would not make that leap from the info you have.

That's exactly what happened to me too! It was especially fun when the OB made the comments about not being able to feel LOs head because of the bag bulging and then making a crack- something along the lines of walking would probably break my water AFTER i put my jeans back on to walk out to my car, get my bags and head up to the birth center. I have never walked so slow and non-bouncy in my life! lol
