Can we talk newborn gas, pretty please?

I am breastfeeding and about 3 days ago I ate some cereal (first milk I've had since having DD) and I'm concerned because the same night and every day since DD has had really bad gas.  She grunts and moans and pulls her legs up whenever she's passing gas or pooping.  She sounds like she's in pain.  DD#1 didn't have any issues with anything I ate.  I don't know if a bit of milk can cause this or if something else is going on.  I'd love pointers from any moms who've dealt with baby gas issues.  Remedies, massage techniques, any advice you have is much appreciated!

I can't find Mylicon...I think it was on the medicine recall.  Wonder if the GasEx stuff is too.  I have the little tummies stuff and it doesn't seem to work for her.  Perhaps I'll send DH to CVS to see what they have a bit later.

  • I used to lay Cooper on his back and massage his tummy then push his knees up to his tummy and keep alternating until he'd toot. Embarrassed  (Picture the shape the large intestine makes and you want to follow that path going clockwise and down. I'm sure you can google infant massage for gas if you need pictures or demonstration.)

  • Mylicon didn't help L any but gripe water worked wonders. I also did what Suzi G did to get the toots.
  • My OB told ME to take gas drops.  I have the HEB Infant gas drops and take 0.6 mg after every meal and before bed.  She said it will also help the baby.
  • the little tummies should be the same as mylecon. it's all symethicone (sp?) so if that doesn't work, mylecon wouldn't either. google "i love you infant massage" and see if the tummy massage comes up. the i love you is a pattern that follows the intestines. if you have the Dr Sears book, he talks about it in there...

  • It could be the gastro-colic reflex, which is normal. DD had this for a few weeks. I thought she was in a lot of pain, but it turned out to be normal.

    Gastro-colic reflex

When a baby sharply pulls away from the breast or bottle, fidgets, grunts, passes some gas or a poop and then returns to feeding, this is due to the gastro-colic reflex. This is normal infant behavior! Feedings the gastro-colic reflex, which triggers an urge to poop. Sometimes a baby will poop, sometimes pass gas, other times there will be nothing to show for his efforts. When observed during feeding this reflex is often mistaken as a sign of pain.

  • Mylicon never worked for either of mine, unfortunately... but it may have just been that Gastro-colic reflex mentioned above, as sometimes there was no gas.
  • Mylicon doesn't work for many babies, I didn't even try it this time around. Brady was much gassier than Grant ever was. There is very little in your diet that would actually affect your baby so I don't think that's it and wouldn't worry about it. Honestly the gas is totally normal and just a part of their little digestive systems figuring out how to work. The bicycle legs as well as tummy massage definitely help. Brady's was the worst from about 2-6 weeks, and now he is rarely gassy/grunting.

  • Cohen was sensitive to milk that I ate in cereal.  Now if it was mac n' cheese or something where the milk is mixed in no problems.  We also had to becareful with strawberries.  I have only had a bowl of cereal once a month or so. With strawberries I tried eating them again and it really bothered his tummy so I just won't eat them.

Here is the part on kellymom where it talks about sensitivity.
