4 month stats and rice cereal questions.

Layla had her 4 month appt today and is cuddling with mommy now.

Weight 12 lbs 13 oz - 40th percentile

Length 25" - 75th percentile

Head 15.5" -  still 10th percentile but growing at the right rate so no worries

I shared my concerns about her weight since everyone constantly comments about how little she is. Dr is not concerned and said she is doing fine and has lots of energy- L was a happy baby grabbing for everything and even punched the pedi in the face (payback maybe?). We discussed her nursing habits and eating patterns which are all in line for a BF baby. Pedi said if I was concerened I could start introducing rice cereal once a day. When did you start LO on rice cereal? Any tips?

Re: 4 month stats and rice cereal questions.

  • We waited until 6 months even though the doctor gave the OK at 4. Honestly, it was partly because I was lazy. Nursing was just too easy, and I didn't see the need yet. It also gave me two more months of only having to deal with breast milk poop in the cloth diapers.  Tracey was 90+%.

  • Cereal fills the tummy and has far fewer calories than BM, so I don't get the recommendation.

And I'm all about the lazy too, I hate feeding solids, it's such a pain. I started both kids pretty much at 6mo.

  • C started solids about a month ago, but we've skipped cereal so far.  It really has no/minimal nutritional value, and is more for "practice".

  • i started both kids on solids at 6 mos. with Tru i never did rice cereal. outside of added iron, it has no nutritional value. with mathis, we did try it for about a day as his 1st food because of his reflux but he didn't like it so i moved on.

honestly, if you're worried about her nutrition, give her avocado. it's pretty much the only whole food out there that is so nutritious a human could live on them and water. plus, it's got all that good fat!

Neither pedi nor I are concerned about her nutrition since she's BF but I was just tired of the comments of her being so small for her age. Pedi says she's fine so I need to trust that she is and keep going with the BM. We'll start solids at 6 months and see how she does then. Avocado will be first on my list!!!!!

People don't know what a baby is supposed to look like! I'm convinced of it. Mathis is so skinny but people are always like "what a big boy you have there." Um, not really. You can't let people's comments shape your decisions (not saying *you are. more the universal 'you') and there should be no uniform size expectation for babies. People are just silly!

I'll see if I can find the link to avocado nutritional information. It's really impressive.

THIS!  Although DS was like at 30% for weight (although everyone told me how "chunky" he was!  go figure).  I think at that age, he had tanked in his stats b/c he was going to DC, so I had to guess on his milk intake to send with him.  The pedi recommended I up his milk intake (I think it was a little low at the time - but I had no idea!).  She also did recommend starting solids if I wanted, but I didn't - I waited until 6 months.  Partly b/c of the statistics of waiting, and partly b/c dealing with BM only was so much easier.  He is fine - he's now in the 45ish% range for weight and chugging along just fine in his "curve".  (DS has a really small head, too - I think he is in the 4% range!  I don't think it looks small, but pedi has never had a problem with it, as long as it stays consistant.)

  • We did rice cereal for a week or so and then moved on to fruits and veggies.  He hated avocado but loves sweet potatoes, squash, bananas, apples, pears, peaches, and lots of others.  Cereal is really more for practice than anything.  We started at 4 months.

  • We tried rice cereal twice last week and it was a no go. He made a yucky face and cried. He didn't spit it out though. Today we tried peaches and again he made a yucky face and cried. I think he just doesn't get the spoon and is confused because it isn't his milk.

I guess he just isn't ready. We wanted to start rice cereal because of his reflux.

This was us as well.  Did rice cereal alone for about a week, then half and half with a veggie for about another month, then full on baby food.  My kids loved green beans....yuck :) I did veggies alone for a bit before introducing fruit just so they wouldn't enjoy the sweetness of the fruit to the veggie.  Just my silly brain.

  • We got the go ahead to start rice cereal at 4 months as well but I waited until 6 months.  DS was doing just fine on BM.  I gave him rice cereal for 3 days when he was 6 months old and it was horrible.  It gave him terrible gas so I switched to avocado and we never looked back.  My next baby won't even get rice cereal...it's just a filler if you ask me.  I'll also agree with pp in that BFing exclusively is sooo much easier than breaking out the solids!

  • we also BF and waited until 6 months to do solids (go avacados!!).  and i agree with previous posts, each kid is different and you just can't listen to what people say.  they have verbal diarrhea and are just looking for something to say, not trying to hurt our feelings.  i had to convince myself of this when i had 9 pound babies and everyone, including my grandma mentioned all the time what big babies i have.  my grandma (love her tons) told me she was sorry i couldn't have small babies like she did.  she thought her 6 pound babies were so pretty.  i personally think a good chunky baby is pretty too Big Smile

plus they all even out later on.

  • I started early - 3 months.  Cooper was hungry.all.the.time.  And I felt ok with it because the first night I mixed up 1 T of cereal with 2oz BM and he ate pretty well the whole thing.  It took a few weeks to get the tongue thing right.  Most people say that the first few times the cereal just ends up all over them...but not my little guy.  He wasn't going to let anything go!
  • We started cereal at 5 months.  She wasn't ready before then.  And don't feel bad, Reese didn't even hit 12 pounds until she was over 5 months old.  And at 8+ months, just now hit 14 lbs.  She is still wearing 3 month clothes!

She IS tiny...but in a super cute way.  I mean...my kid is huge.  So it's hard for me to compare.
