Banannas= epic fail, Sweet potatoes=

Success!

bananas were ugly. Absolutely hated them. Arms flung in the air, squirming in her seat. I think she may have even tried to kick me.

Sweet potatoes on the other hand went over great. She ate the entire jar. Happy faces & a full belly.

I cannot believe my little girl is on solids. How did this happen? I can't decide what to let her try next week? I'd like to venture into making my own food too. How tine consuming is it? Anyone have any recipes. I'm going to look online too, but I was wondering if any of you had some favorites.

  • What bananas are you using?  Caroline hated the Earth's Best at the beginning, but loved real bananas (still does). I would just mash them up a little for her.  She also loved squash.

    At the beginning I used mostly jars, but once I started making my own I realized how easy it was.  I wish I had just made it from the start.  Use ice cube trays so you can freeze the extra.  You'll more than likely have extras when you make a batch.  Put it in the freezer until it's frozen and then put it in a ziploc, label with the contents and the date and you're ready to go.  Then when you're ready just pull out a couple of cubes.  I would usually get them out a few hours early and let them thaw in the fridge.

    I used www.wholesomebabyfood.com for ideas and how to do it and for some guidelines.  Most of the time I used frozen organic bags of veggies and fruits.  I used my immersion blender for everything and it worked great.

    Oh yeah - another favorite of hers was peas.  She loved them - pureed and then as finger foods.  Peaches are also great to buy frozen and blend up.

    Good luck!

  • I'm using earths best. That's good to know Caroline liked real bananas. I was so bummed she was going to hate them. That's sounds super easy to make baby food. I've got some frozen peas so I'll try those next week.

  • I have heard that banana/avocado is a delighful mixture.  Although, I don't know if you're ready to do mixtures yet.

    I have the books Super Baby Foods and a William Sonoma Cooking For Baby book that were both given to me since I said I plan on making all K's foods.

  • Ditto wholesomebabyfood.com!  I LIVED on that site because I was too cheap to spend money on a book.  lol  That site has everything you need to know, as well as toddler recipes & ideas for mixing which items once she gets a little older.

    I did 100% homemade baby food.  I did about 4 hours once a month and made enough food for the month.  I would have all 4 burners going, plus the oven, microwave, & the mini crock pot.

    Kasey absolutely LOVED butternut squash.  It's really sweet and sort of tastes like a sweet potato.  Check out the website and they'll tell you how to prepare it.  GL!
