Garage Sale

SIL most prob will be having a garage sale this weekend, and I'm so excited.  Dh and I did some major organizing this weekend, and I have a few things I want to get rid of (but not donate)... so perfect opportunity to try to sell!  Any tips?!

I have a coworker that told me she had one once and a few people came looking for used bottles of perfumes... which I have a ton of that I don't use anymore!  I figured I can get quite a few bucks from them.  Plus I have a few knicknacks (sp) laying around that I hope will be treasure to someone else.  LOL

Oh, and I have a vaccuum (Kenmore canister) which is brand new (used 3x in 5 yrs) that I never liked that I want to sell in order to get the Dyson I've been wanting... and I want to sell my entertainment table and cabinet from family room as I found THE ONE at Costco the other day!  But both these items may be sold for more $ on Craigslist, huh?!  I may list them this week to see the feedback I get.

Re: Garage Sale

  • I have no tips, just wanted to wish you luck! :)

To kind of butt in and piggyback on your post, if anyone has any tips for selling on Craigslist I would really appreciate it! We are looking to sell a bedroom set that is in great condition - two nightstands, armoire, and dresser. Unfortunately we don't have the matching sleigh bed anymore :( It was really nice, too. Oh well...I figure whoever buys the set can just use it with a coordinating bed. Anyway, the pieces are used but in very good condition and I'm just wondering how much I can expect to get for them.

  • I guess it would depend on how much the original price was, and how "gently used" it is.  If in excellent condition, and good workmanship, I'd place the add for $400 OBO?  See what you get in response.  I have never sold on Craigslist but I have a friend that did, and they tried to scam her!  Just be careful with "pay w/ money orders" people.  And if items at your house, make sure your DH or father are home when showing the pieces.

    GL.

  • GL!

DH has bought/sold stuff on Craigslist.  When he's bought stuff, he's usually met the person in a public place, like a mall.  But, this was for computer parts so they were small items.  He did sell our former computer desk and he would just screen the calls and ask a lot of questions or give a lot of information over the phone before giving them our address.  We got lucky with that one because it was an elderly couple that came by, bought it, and took it home in their truck.  I guess you can just "screen" the interested buyers before giving away any personal info.

Yeah, that would be my initial recommendation, but it is hard w/ furniture!  Just make sure to list a lot of info in the ad (dimensions) and photos.

  • My sister has sold a few things on Craigslist...  Recently it was my nephews little fireman bed - super cute, but he never actually used it to sleep on! LOL Anyway, she researched and found that the manufacturer no longer makes it - not because of any recalls or anything, they just discontinued that product - so she added that and as much detail as possible about the bed.  So my rec is, def put in as much info as possible and promote the item; research the item to see how much retailers are selling it for, etc.

And you can say that you'll only accept cash. And def don't be home alone when the people come to see the items, cause you know there are a bunch of crazies out there... Good luck!!!!!

  • Old clothes, shoes, junk priced by the box?  LOL  I swear there are a lot professional garage sale shoppers out there (Haitans and consignment store owners, etc)!!  Good Luck, Jackie!!

Jen, you can always post it here first too.  LOL  Just in case!  :)
