Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How do-able is it to lose 20 pounds in 3 months?

As in, how hard would I need to bust it?

In my entire life, I've never really tried to lose weight with a specific goal in mind. I did lose about 15 pounds when I started this job a few years ago, but it wasn't really an effort to lose X amount of weight - my previous job had been killling me and I didn't exercise and ate fast food all the time. When I started here, I was working far fewer hours and started running again.

I've been dicking around and still have almost 20 pounds of pregnancy weight to lose. I gained 49, so I've lost 30 pounds, but still have a long ways to go. I'm frustrated with myself. I've never been really thin, but I've always been able to eat whatever I want (within reason) while working out and stay around a size 8 (I'm 5'7"). Now I'm around a 12 or 14.

Anyway, whining aside, if you've lost about this amount of weight, how hard did you work at it? I balk at counting points or feeling hungry all the time, so I'm hoping I'm not setting myself up for failure. I'd like to be back at my pre-pregnancy weight by the time my baby turns one.

  • I have the same mindset as you.  I've never had to try to lose weight and the first (I'm not even going to tell you how much I gained) lbs came off pretty easily.  I'd like to lose about 20 more lbs, as well.  However, I will say this.  I know myself and I know I'm not motivated at this point.  I'm not good at eliminating foods but I also don't overeat.  I would just need to adjust my lifestyle and some food habits to lose the extra.

I think you have a reasonable goal and it is definitly acheivable.  But, you have to want it.  After kids, it takes more than it used to lose weight.  I did it with my 1st- was back in a size 6 at 5 mos pp.  With this one, it's harder and I don't seem to care as much as I should.....

Good luck!  I think you can do it!

  • I once lost about 15 lbs in one month so I think you can do it.

However, I was starving (counting calories) and working out like a crazy woman.

I never understand some people's mindset on weight loss. There is some sacrifice involved. You may be hungry an

  • I walk for an hour every night.  I try to eat healthy (fast food once a week, fresh food, limited food that is packaged, lots of water).

Before I got pg, I was in a pilates class twice a week.  THAT worked wonders for me.  I highly recommend it.  DH's hours changed; otherwise, I'd be leaving the baby w/ him to start back up in class.

Thanks, good luck to you too!

I think what got to me is yesterday we went out on the boat. And I was wearing my size 12 one piece with a dress on top, and we hooked up with my neighbor and his buddies out on the lake. And he had these two hot skinny tan chicks in their bikinis lounging out on his boat like they were shooting a rap video or something, and here I am, pasty white in my mom suit and cover-up, getting vomited on and slathering sunscreen on my kid. I don't think I've ever felt less sexy in my life. At least my husband had something nice to look at for once, because all he sees at home is pasty flab.

I There is some sacrifice involved. You may be hungry and a little uncomfortable for a bit becasue that is the way it goes but you will adjust to not eating as much as soon you will wonder why you wanted to eat 4 serving of stuffing at dinner!

    You can do it!

The thinnest I've been since I was a kid was when I stopped eating sweets and any kind of refined wheat (white bread, pasta, etc.) That was when I was about 23. I should do that again, if I can find the self-discipline! I had just read Sugar Blues and was inspired. I need to read it again.

  • ok in all honesty.  I lost 16 lbs & it took me about 8 months of bootcamp.

I wasn't big by any means.  I was up to 145 after I got married & I started bootcamp & it took me 6-8 months to loose it.  The boot camp classes burned about 800 calories per session & it was 3 times per week. We ran 2 miles & did weight training & different cardio drills for an hour.  I probably could have lost it more quickly had I eaten better, but I am picky & eat very little meat.

I say...eat the shiit out of grilled/baked chicken & steamed veggies & doa combo of weight & cardio exercises & it will come off in a few months.

  • It really depends on how much you weigh now.  Obviously it is easier for a 200 lb woman to lose 20 lbs than a 120 lb woman (all health issues aside).  A "healthy" amount to lose is 2 lbs a week so about 16 lbs in 2 months.  This tends to be an amount that can be lost with lifestyle changes as opposed to fad diets or starvation (which both lead to regaining the weight once you eat normally again).  Keep in mind that if youre nursing you should maintain a certain calorie intake or your supply may dip.

FWIW, Im 5'7' too and gained 48 lbs while pg (and I worked out every day while pg) and lost it all by about 5 months.  I work out for about 1.5 hours 3x a week and then add in 2 other days of running about 3-4 miles.  I have to get up at 4am to do this though so it definitely takes dedication.  I cant diet, I like to eat too much and so this is my alternative - I eat what I want but I make it a point to workout!

Shameful to admit this, but we have a gym here in the office. I have no excuses. I need to get my sh*t together, pack my lunch a few days a week, and run on the treadmill.

Thanks ladies, you are giving me that kick I need.

also, be sure to do some sort of strength training.  even if it is just some push ups or curls or ab workout.  Muscle burns more calories so if you are more muscular, you will burn more calories at anything you do.

GL you can do it.  I use Nikibugs P90X post as an accountability tool, Do it too, it helps shame you if you haven't done anything!  LMAO!!

  • I think it's definitely do-able - just set your mind to it!

  • You can do it!  Especially since you have a gym at work!  It is hard getting into a routine but once you do it is easy...well at least you feel better afterward.  I still can't say, I love working out!  Good luck!
  • I think your goal is good since it's less than 2lbs a week... but by good I mean healthy, I think it'll be hard to do.

I've been overweight most of my life, but since having DS have dropped about 20lbs under my pre-pg weight.

The secret for me appears to be eating protein snacks between meals - greek yogurt with fruit, cheese and an apple, a southbeach protein bar. It keeps me full so I'm never hungry and keeps me from overeating at mealtimes. DH has been trying it too and it's working for him (he doesn't weigh himself, but his shorts fell off him this weekend so I'll take that as a good sign)

  • I definitely think you can do it!  It is a reasonable amount of time and it is good to have a goal.

I'm 5'6" and gained 50 lbs while pregnant.  The first 35 or so melted off, then I had to work at it.  I'm now down 64lbs (size 6 or 8) and have been maintaining that for a while.  What helped me the most was changing my diet.  I don't have time for a lot of extra exercise with DD in my life now.  I eat non-processed foods, mostly a ton of fruit, some veggies, nuts and lean proteins.  I'm never hungry like I was when I was counting points for WW.  I eat fruit from breakfast, have nuts for a snack, lean protein, veggie and fruit for lunch, then more nuts for an afternoon snack.  Some days I'm not even hungry at dinner time.  Unheard of for me!  Try to eat as clean as possible and you will be surprised how good you feel and that you are not as hungry.

It is a lot of extra work, but worth it to me.  On Sundays I usually cut up tons of fruit and put it in containers so I can grab and go on my way to work.  Also I bake chicken or turkey breast and cut it up into 4 oz serving sizes to make things easier.  I put that in baggies in my freezer and they thaw pretty quickly.

Good luck, you can do it!!

WW - I lost 24 lbs. in less than 3 months. In those 3 months I didn't excersize all that much and I did cheat here and there. You can totally do it! I did and I lovvvve food!! Good luck : )
  • It's definitely doable. I usually do 20-30 pounds in the first three months on South Beach (this is my third time and I lost 7 pounds in the first two weeks, now I'm tryin 1-2 pounds a week thereafter). Of all the diets out there, I like this one because I don't feel like I'm starving or cutting all carbs. Plus I'm exercising this time, so I didn't lose any weight this week or last but went down a dress size thanks to muscle conversion.

I think the important thing, no matter which diet/exercise strategy you choose, is to make sure you're still feeling good enough to take care of LO. I wouldn't recommend hardcore weightloss until STTN, just because that can really make it difficult to curb cravings or function (I tried early on postpartum and realized that it was like banging my head against a wall.) Also, if you're nursing, you should be careful with calories and nutrients.

    Best of luck!
