Would you do a trade in?

Here's the back story....around January my dh and I took my 2008 jeep liberty in for an oil change at the dealer...the person who worked on my car forgot to put the new oil in after taking the old out so when dh picked up my car he drove it off the lot without any oil ...killing my engine.  I had a fit and went to the dealer and demanded they do something about this.  They ended up giving us a brand new engine (ours only had about 20,000 miles at the time) and a lifetime power train warrenty along with free oil changes for a year.  The dealer has been a nightmare to deal with...our "free" oil changes all had to be used within 4 months ...we got 12 changes..they have been so horrible and along with not wanting to deal with them I swear my car doesn't drive the way it use to...especially lately with the horrible heat in our area.  Anyway, I received something in the mail from another chrysler/jeep dealer stating they were in need of used jeeps and would pay off whatever we owed on our car if we traded it in on a new jeep.  I'm a bit cautious about doing it...I've never done anything like that before...not sure what the payments would be on a brand new jeep...we pay about 280 a month for our 2008.  It would be nice to have the 100,000 mile warrenty along with the peace of mind of knowing that it's not likely that a brand new car would have the issues mine is currently having...any thoughts???  TIA!

Re: Would you do a trade in?

  • My parents have had 2 Grand Cherokees and both had major engine issues (even brand new).  Even when they worked they make such loud noises and knocked regardless of the quality of gasoline in them!  This was in addition to the other issues they've had with them.

I'm just kind of unsure about the quality of Chrysler products in general.  They always get horrible Consumer Reports reviews, specifically related to quality and owner satisfaction.

  • That sucks!  We've really liked our liberty up until the stupid dealership goofed....we would probably get another liberty if we did this deal.

  • We have a Rubicon and love it but it is totally not baby friendly. If you do end up with a new Jeep I would expect your payments to at least double, they are not cheap cars. I think the ad for "needing used Jeeps" is most likely a marketing ploy. If I were you I would start by going to their dealership and pricing cars, see if you even like working with them. They do have loyalty incentives as well which may help. GL.

babyformeg--I would only do the deal if we were able to get our payments near or slightly higher then what they are now....which the ad stated that this may be possible (but I'm not getting my hopes up!)

Both of your siggy pics are too cute...but the 2nd one is cracking me up!!!  No pun intended!!! :0)

  • In our experience every time we trade in a car/truck for a newer one, 6 months down the road we wish we wouldn't have done it.

We are not going to trade anything in until the cars and truck we have break down....we've learned our lesson.

Hell, all our cars would have been paid off years ago if we wouldn't have traded them in for newer ones.

Thinking of all that extra money we "would" have makes me sickCrying

  • Electric--that does suck!  We've never owned "brand new" cars...we've always bought used...which is why I'm so tempted by the 100,000 mile warrenty...everytime one of our cars breaks down it all comes completely outta our pocket with the exception of this new warrenty we have due to the dealers stupid mistake...but if the oil changes are any indication of how we'll be dealt with when problems arise that are covered by the warrenty,...I'd almost rather take it to a mechanic independent of chrysler.

  • negative equity. If you owe more than the car is worth, they are just going to tack it onto the new loan. If that's the case, no, I wouldn't trade it in.

  • It's a marketing  ploy.  We get getting letters and phone calls from our VW dealer saying they really wanted our beetle and would give us a great deal (our loan is paid off).  We went to a few other dealers first to see what they would give us for trade in and the other dealers actually offered us more than the VW dealer did.  When I brought up that I came in because they kept contacting me that they would give me a "great price" the told me it was a great price and wouldn't negotiate even after I told them 4 other dealers offered more.  Needless to say we did not trade in and are looking now to sell our car privately then buy a different used car privately in order to avoid the ridiculous dealer markups.
