Pay more for babies at in-home DC??

I have been using an in home dcp for almost a year.  She does NOT charge more for babies- same rate for everyone, although she does offer a little discount with 2 kids.

We are thinking of using DH's mom to watch our kids.  We have a 2 yr old and will have a new baby in Sept.  We THOUGHT  that the rate would be the same for both kids (she never said otherwise for the past few months when we were talking about going w/ her....well...she is changing her mind.

Apparently- she has talked to other in home dcp's (in a bigger town near her- she is in a small town) who have told her that they charge more for babies (up to age 2?!?).

I have a problem w/ this for a couple of reasons:

-grandma watched our nephew this entire last year for the rate we expected to get (and he was an infant)

-I feel like she is trying to get more $$ out of us because we pay more overall right now to our dcp.

-I understand she is trying to set up a "business" but these are her grandkids and as of right now, she will only have 3 grandkids!

I hope I am not being petty.  I do want to pay her a fair wage, but this came out of nowhere- so- do you pay more for your infant than say your 2 year old at an inhome daycare?  I think she is thinking rate would go down at 2 years old!

  • I know regular daycares charge more for infants up to age 2.  Babies require more work - I'm not surprised that an in-home would do the same.

I'm not sure what your issue is. You're going to use MIL for daycare. You were planning on paying her.  She's looking to turn this into a business, so she's setting up her rate structure now.  And it's changed from what she's done in the past - why is she not allowed to do that?

If she's approaching this as a business deal, then approach it the same way.  Determine if she's really the best option for you.  If she isn't, then stay where you are.

All of this.  If this bothers you, then using your MIL as your DCP may not be a good idea for you.

  • My in home doesn't charge more for babies- same rate for everyone. Others i've called do charge more, it just depends.
  • Our daycare charges different rates (highest for babies) for each year old (except 4-5 are the same).

  • Neither of our kids are in in-homes right now, but I scan craigslist in my area pretty regularly, and it's not uncommon to see ads for in-home daycares that charge more for infants, or more for kids who aren't potty trained (obviously including infants).

none of the in-home daycares we looked into charged more for infants...it was all one rate.  I wouldn't have been surprised if one did though as I know centers do and babies are more work.  What I think would bother me more is that she charged less for her other grandkid and also that you had agreed to a price and now she wants to change it.  I guess I would also think that a MIL would offer some sort of discount for her own grandkids then what everyone else would pay... but that is just me.

I do have to say it is hard having a MIL watch your kids and you do have to be open about any issues and able to discuss them and if you don't think you will be able to then it may not work out so well...
