Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How big do you buy your lo's shoes?

I normally buy one size up so that they can wear them for longer especially if I spent more money for them.

I don't know what is common practice or if I should be buying them to fit now or bigger than I already do.

Re: How big do you buy your lo's shoes?

  • You should be buying shoes to fit now. You should be able to put your pinky finger in between the heel of the shoe and the baby's foot, and there should be about a thumb-width between baby's toes and the end of the shoe.

  • I usually buy the size she's in.  When she first started wearing shoes she was a 5 1/2 wide, so I bought those.  But they got small just a few weeks ago so I got her a few size 6 shoes for the rest of the summer and a pair for the fall.

When we first got her foot measured the lady said she was a size 5, so to order a 5 1/2.  That's what we did.

ETA: Yeah get the correct size.  I mean could you imagine walking around in a pair of shoes that were 1 size bigger?

  • We bought her shoes to fit now so that it wouldn't effect her walking since she was new at it when we got them.
  • i was told by stride rite to purchase shoes a half size bigger than the size they measure
  • If they are for her to wear now, we'll buy them to fit now. The only way I buy them bigger is if I'm buying them for the next season or something.

  • I buy to fit. If you are concerned about the cost, try shopping at Target for shoes. When she was a lot younger, we were buying the special 'new walker' shoes, but now she can run and jump and is super rough on her shoes, so I buy from Target because the prices are great and the shoes are cute and sturdy.

Same here.  We recently went there to get DS new shoes.  He was measuring a 6 and he's wearing 6 1/2.

Same here.  DS was sized at a 4 wide, so we bought 4.5 wide.  Those are getting too small now so I'll be shoe shopping soon - maybe this weekend.  I'll have him sized again and get 1/2 size bigger - which will prob. be 5.5 wide.

  • Why on earth would you buy shoes that don't fit? Toddlers are clumsy enough as it is w/o having their feet slide around in shoes. (I'm not talking about a1/2 size up.)
