Amount of time for sleeping during the day?

I know it will vary per child, but I am not sure what to expect at 4.5 months (we also have to adjust for prematurity).

The boys were sleeping about 3 to 3.5 hours during the day at daycare, which seemed reasonable, but recently the amount of time asleep has been creeping up. I want to make sure that they are getting enough rest, but don't want them sleeping the day away.

What was you little one's average sleeping time during the day at 4.5 months?

Thanks!

Re: Amount of time for sleeping during the day?

  • I honestly don't remember total sleep time for that age, but I know that DS was still taking 3 naps.  As long as it's not affecting how they sleep at night, I wouldn't worry about it.  DS periodically goes through phases where he needs more sleep.  He often does it when teething or when he's going through a growth or developmental spurt.

ETA:  Also, if you're spending any time outside (although you might not be with 4.5 month old twins), the heat is wearing us down much more quickly than normal. DS has been regularly taking 3+ hour naps, and even I'm napping.  I haven't been able to sleep during the day since DS was 3 months old--even during my 1st trimester of this PG!

  • The more sleep, the better! The only caveat is if they aren't sleeping at night. If nighttime sleep is a problem, make sure their last nap isn't too late in the afternoon or that they aren't sleeping in longer than 3 hour stretches at a time so as to interfere with nighttime sleep.

If nighttime sleep isn't a problem, then let them be and enjoy the fact that you have two great sleepers (I'm incredibly jealous). Good sleep in infancy is linked to better learning and memory, and protective against obesity.

  • I can't remember the total time either, but I know at that age, we were still trying to make sure that he didn't stay awake for more than about 2 hours at a time during the day. So he was taking at least 3 naps a day, sometimes 4.

Sometimes, especially during a growth spurt, it did seem like Warner slept all day. But since he was still sleeping around 12 hours at night, I didn't worry about it. If they are sleeping, they probably need it. Just cherish the quiet time while it lasts. When they get down to taking just one afternoon nap you'll miss the time where they slept the day away ;-)

  • Looked it up--4-5 hrs during the day (in three naps, the last one being shorter) and 11.5 hrs at night.  (on average)

This was a huge issue that we had when BabyCrown was in DC, at 3 mos he was sometimes only getting 2 hrs of naps in during the day, which made nighttimes, well, a nightmare.  The better babies sleep during the day, usually the better they sleep at night.

But you also didn't say anything about sleep at night.  So if the babies are doing fine at night and not sleeping a whole lot during the day, then they probably just don't need it as much.
