Hard red spot after shots

DD got shots at her 1 year check up on 7/8. She had a bruise on one leg, but other than that was fine.

This past Friday, 7/16, she developed a hard red spot where the shot was given (same leg as the bruise). I tried to rub it and that didn't seem to bother her. She doesn't seem to have any other symptoms.

I called the Dr today and they want her to come in to have it looked at. Has anyone else experienced this after shots? What was the outcome?

Re: Hard red spot after shots

  • DD got them after her flu shots. When we went in for the booster I asked and she said it could just be a reaction to the preservative in the vaccine. Doc said as long as she doesn't have a large rash or acting any different, she'll be fine.

  • I was just thinking about posting this, and I could have written it word for word. I didn't call the Doc, so I don't really know. Since it had only been a couple of days and she was acting normal, I was going to wait.

I just wanted you to know that you weren't alone. Please post back, I am curious to see what the Doc says.

  • I wouldn't worry.  This is common.  DDs pedi said it was nothing to worry about.

BTW,  my dog gets the same thing after vaccines....LOL.

  • The exact same thing happened to my DD1 after her one-year shots. A week afterwards, she got a red lump on one leg where she'd gotten a shot.

It's a minor reaction, and it goes away. When I got my vax updated before TTC, I had the same reaction to the MMR shot, so I wasn't too worried.

Redness/swelling at the injection site is a common vax reaction.

  • I'm currently on hold with my doctors office right now for almost the same thing. DS got his 15 month vaccinations (even though he's 21 months) on july 2, had a small red spot, and just yesterday it turned into a huge raised red rashy looking spot.

The hard spot that you described though, DS had that before too. It was apparent within 1-3 days of being vaccinated though, and it took about a week to go away.
