Trying to Get Pregnant

OPK Question

Good Morning!

AF decided to rear her ugly head this weekend, so it's on to the next cycle for us. I've decided to go beyond temping to pinpoint ovulation this month from drinking Green Tea to increase CM (I never get EWCM) to using OPK.

I've read a lot of info on OPK, but would like to hear some first hand experiences from everyone on here. When you test, do you just test once a day or twice? And what time do you test, I've heard that around 2:00 p.m. is ideal.

I'd appreciate any advice you ladies have for me.

This is the first month that I ever got a +OPK and I am a bit of an addict as far as peeing on those things!  I normally tested at least twice a day - normally around 10:00 and then late afternoon around 4:30 or so. Sometimes I test with FMU, too (which I know it says not to, but like I said, I'm an addict).  Good luck!

  • When I first started I tested 2x/day. Once with FMU and once around 5:30. After a few cycles I noticed I was only getting +'s with FMU so I stopped the second test. I definetly recommend doing it 2x/day since and LH surge can be as short as 12 hours.

  • Seems like it tends to vary a bit from person to person.  I only tested once a day at about 1:30 in the afternoon and got two + opks in a row.  It sounds like other people catch theirs in the morning.  I'd buy some internet cheapies and just try it out until you find out what time of day you catch your surge.

  • I just ordered 40 of them on amazon for $10. So looks like I can pee on as many sticks as I want! hah!

When do you girls start testing? My cycle varies so much. I O anywhere from day 11 to 16, although I have had a few cycles that CD 13=my O date. If I started testing on CD 11 do you think I'd catch my LH surge?

  • I love those kits. I have not done temps...its just easy to pee each morning.  I had a M/C in May but we got PG using the kit and did it again this month.  I got a little excited and did 2 a day as we got closer.  As soon as it goes negative again...the job it done (we hope).  I am on to when can I pee on the next stick?

  • A bit unrelated but still an OPK question.  I saw on FF that the three days before ovulatoin are the most fertile.  After reading about it though I learned that you ovulate AFTER the positive OPK.  DH and I TTC the night before and the morning of ovulation.  Do you think my chances are still good for BFP?

The best times are the 4 days leading up to, the day of and the day after. Your chances are still good.

If your earliest O day was cd11 I would start testing on CD8. If you are already passed that just start now. That way you are sure.

  • I typically O around CD 19/20, so I start OPK'ing at CD 13-14 just to be safe.  I just do one a day until they start getting darker (mine definitely get increasingly dark as the surge comes)- sometimes I'll do 2 a day when I get a positive to see how long it lasts...

    BFP #1- 4/2011; DD Brynn born 12/2011

BFP #2- 7/13; EDD- 4/2/14; Lost DS at 20 weeks (11/16/13) due to cord accident

BFP #3- 3/14; EDD- 11/28/14; Lost DD at 15 weeks (6/7/14)- cause unknown

To my angels- I held you every second of your lives and I'll love you every second of mine.

  • I heard that doing early morning OPK's are more accurate, but since I'm addicted to peeing on them too, I take one in the morning and one around 5:00pm starting on CD14. I always get ancy durning this time too because you want to have sex at the perfect time. Which... I know is not in my control. So... the hubby and I usually TTC two days before, day before and day of. Sometimes... I get two positive OPK's two days in a row!! Then I'm real confused.... so, I hope for the best! I'm on CD14 today and we TTC last night. Last month I got a positive OPK and CD17... So, I'm thinking I'll TTC on CD15, 16 and 17. You hear so many things.... which do you girls believe to be the most effective? I now understand that once you get a positive OPK... it just means you have a LH surge, then once you get a negative, most likely the egg released that day.

    Hmm lots of things...

Early morning opks are not the most positive because for many LH is processed during sleep.

2 +opks are nothing to worry about. Many get them for multiple days. General rule of thumb is that you ovulate 12-48 hours after the last +

A +opk does not actually mean that you ovulate. Only charting can confirm that.

We do EOD until a +opk then everyday until ovulation is confirmed with a temp shift.

Also, don't stop taking the OPKs until O is confirmed with a temp shift because your body can fake out.

  • Just to confirm... if you get a -OPK and the day before you had a +OPK... that does confirm ovulation correct?
  • imageBlessieJo06:

No it does not confirm ovulation. OPKs detect the level of LH in your system. When your body gears up to ovulate the LH surges which gives you a +opk. Your body can gear up and not release an egg. Only temping can tell you if you actually ovulate after a +opk

  • I started on CD20. I can usually tell with my CM when I'm getting closer to O. I tested once a day with FMU until I got a +, then I tested 2x per day. This was my first cycle using them, and I was surprised to get positives 2x per day for 5 days. This is exactly why you should also temp! I would never have known which one of those days I likely Oed without temping.

I also realize that using FMU is not advised, but I easily get positives with it. Some people don't though, so you might try the afternoon.

  • Right... I understand what you're saying, but I know for sure I actually did ovulate if I had a period and wasnt prego..

    NO NO NO NO.

You can get a period and NOT O. A period does NOT mean you Oed. Not now, not yesterday, not ever.

  • Interesting. I'm pretty sure I am ovulating due to me being on clomid and my OPK's. My doctor says the same thing. I'm just new to hearing about the temping method.
