Re: Fort Knox???

  • DH is in the Marines, but we were stationed there from 2005-2008. Do you want to live on post?  What type of work will you be looking for?

  • I was born and raised right around Fort Knox. My family still lives there. What kind of work and housing do you want?
  • I don't know much about fort knox, but we're stationed at fort campbell and we like it. I've been to fort knox for a graduation but that's about it and it was a very large post! I know a lot of people go to basic there but thats really all I know :] good luck on your move!!
  • I am currently at Ft Knox, but DH and I live off-post. What would you like to know?

  • Thanks ladies!! I am looking for off-post rentals, I have been checking AHRN but wondering if there are any other sources? Also looking for employment for myself. I have an associates degree in early childhood education but it's not all that useful right now. I have also worked in the hotel industry and banking.
  • DH is there now. Get on housing ASAP. We had the worst time finding something for him. Most people we know had to sign rental agreements sight unseen because the area has a higher demand than availability.

We lived in Elizabethtown.  I didn't love it, but it was much, much better than Radcliff which is just south of the post.  I think it would be your best bet for housing and employment, unless your DH wants to commute from the Louisville area.  We went to Louisville often on the weekends, but it would have been a PITA to commute daily.

There are a ton of banks in the general area. Seriously, DH and I would comment all the time about the sheer number of banks. With your assoc. degree, you might want to put in an application to substitute teach. There are two school districts: Hardin County and Elizabethtown Independent.  I taught high school in Elizabethtown and we were always short on subs. Most subs I knew worked on a daily basis.

There are some really shady areas around Fort Knox, so I'd be careful. On post housing is a crap shoot.  There are some brand new homes, but also some that should have a "condemned" sign on them.  You might consider putting your name in for post housing just in case.  You can always turn it down.

Let me know if you have any other questions about the area. Good luck!

This.  Radcliff has some nice places but Elizabethtown is going to be 15-20 minutes closer to any restaurants or stores and would be your best bet to find a place to work.  Try looking on USAjobs for on-post positions, I see openings for teachers aides and assistants all of the time. And when my DH found where we are living he just googled rentals for the area and didn't have any problems. Also, word is that because of the post change over there are TONS of new businesses coming in so hopefully the surrounding area will get pretty nice soon.
