Natural Birth

SO frustrated...induction scheduled...grr

At my appointment today, they insisted on scheduling an induction for this Saturday. I will be 14 days past my due date on Sunday.

I had my first internal, too, to see if they could do a membrane sweep to move things along. Well, I wasn't even dilated at all! Just soft, so they couldn't even try the sweep. What's more, my cervix is posterior, so things just aren't looking good. (Though baby and I are just fine).

I have another check on Wednesday, at which point they'll see if things are favorable to do a sweep. And I know I could go from not being dilated to labor in a snap, but I'm just having a hard time with this.

I'm just so frustrated, as I feel like my plans to have a water birth at the midwife center are just getting dashed to pieces with every passing day. I've spent months and months preparing for a natural birth with my husband, and I feel like my body's just failing me. I've been walking every day, having sex, I have had reflexology and accupressure, tried spicy food, I have been taking red raspberry leaf and EPO, all the OWTs. Nothing...ugh.

  • I'm sorry, that must be so frustrating.  FWIW, I was not dilated at all before I went into labor.  A few hours into active labor, my midwife discovered that I had a posterior cervix, which made my labor last quite a bit longer than it should have.  She dealt with it, though, by reaching up there and yanking it down.  It wasn't pleasant.

    Sending lots of labor dust!

  • I'm so sorry.  I hope that your little one decides to make an appearance in the next few days!  I'll be thinking positive thoughts for you.
  • Thanks. That is somewhat encouraging. This is why I am glad I haven't had internals up until this point. I know dilation can take place really fast, so this info potentially means nothing.

It's just difficult to hear now that there's a timeframe on my delivery. You really want to hear good news at this point!

  • Last week my water broke, and I wasn't even dilated.  I took castor oil and boy did it work.  It was NOT pleasant though.  I drank 1/4 cup (midwife's suggestion), and spent almost 2 hours on the toilet.  When I got off the toilet I realized I was having contractions, 2 min. apart.  My baby was born about 5 hours later.

    Good luck!

  • I would be frustrated, too. :(  Hopefully, you'll get netter news on Wednesday, and you still have five days to go into labor on your own.
  • That was pretty much exactly me last summer.  The only thing it took for me to get my labor started was a membrane rupture.  Then, intermittent nipple stimulation kept my contractions coming when it seemed that they were stalling out a little bit.  I did not need Pitocin/Cervadil/etc for my induction.  Had I not been a little dilated, they would have put a foley bulb catheter in my cervix to help things along a little bit the night before but I ended up dilated enough that that wasn't necessary after all.  Good luck!  I hope that everything works out for as drug-free as possible!

This - a lot can happen in a week. I had to set an induction date with my first pg, which definitely messed with my head, too. Aaaand I was totally closed up and not dilated when I had my only pre-labor internal, but contractions started the next morning for me, so it really isn't a predictor of anything. I think you have to be totally totally convinced you'll be pregnant forever before you go into labor, hee hee. Sending labor vibes your way!

I had to schedule an induction with my DD too.  I was so upset/scared.  I did not want drugs and really didn't want a surgery.  I tried to focus on the most important thing-- a healthy baby, even though I felt like my body was failing me again (we TTC for many yrs before IVF).

Anyway, I can definitely relate and what helped me was to visualize my less-than ideal birth and focus on what I could do, should it come to that.  For me it was just resetting expectations and having a plan in place.

GL-- I hope you go soon and don't need the induction!  (I didn't end up needing it)

That's good to hear. I am just imagining the worst now that the induction date is set--like going to be induced and STILL not being dilated would be a disaster. I'd probably end up with every intervention in the book. We will see what happens this week. I'm not giving up on my natural birth just yet.

Thanks, that is good advice. I'm glad you didn't need the induction in the end. I hope things go similarly for me. I need to just realize things might not go as I want, and try to relax. Getting all worked up isn't going to help me go into labor naturally--that's for sure. It's just so difficult to resign yourself to the fact that despite everything, there are some things you cannot control. In the end, I will get to meet my baby soon one way or another, and that's what's important.

  • I know how you are feeling.  I am at 41 and 4 days, though my MW is still giving me the option to induce medically.  She is much calmer and wiser than me!  But I too have tried just about everything save the caster oil.  I am going to see if she can sweep my membrains on Wed at the next appt, though at this point I seriously doubt that will work!  This baby is going to come when she wants to come!  My first who is now almost seven was born at 42 and a day - I was induced with cytotec but nothing was happening, so after a day and a half in the hospital they sent me home, after an hour home labor started.  I ended up having stadol after about 14 hours of labor, but that was it.  She finally came and it was great!  I guess we just bake longer in my family!

I am sending labor dust to you and some relaxing vibes too...the baby will come out!
