Anyone else have to do Advance Directives for the hospital?

I have my NT Scan tomorrow and I'm filling out some paper work for the hospital.  I was surpised when I came across a 13 page document on Advance Directives.  I don't remember doing this in California so I wonder if it's a state by state thing.

What's been your experience?

  • The hospital where I work asks everyone if they have an advance directive, but they don't make you fill one out.

  • Kaiser keeps asking me to do it.  I keep forgetting.
  • Since I have no idea what that is, I guess I didn't have to do it.  I already did all of my hospital paperwork (as far as I know.)

What is an ?Advance Directive?? An advance directive is a legal form that lists your wishes about medical care and treatment. You may also name someone to make choices about your medical care and treatment if you can?t. These forms are called advance directives since they are written in advance of a serious illness, to let other people know your wishes.

Natalee - you're basically stating whether or not you would treatment in a terminal situation and naming a person to make decisions for you if you're unable to.

  • That's what I figured it was.  I definitely haven't filled out anything like that.
  • I filled out a set of forms for that when I had my gall bladder out.  Mainly because anything could happen in surgery (there's always a hypothetical risk that you won't wake up) and I wanted to make sure that my wishes were known in part because I knew my mother didn't agree with certain choices (related to organ donation).  So I put power of attorney in the hands of my then fiancee (now DH) and filled out the paperwork.  It wasn't fun to think of those things but it's never a bad idea to go through it just because that way your wishes for the end of life can be preserved.  I hadn't thought about doing it at the new hospital I'll be going to (since we've moved since I had my gall bladder out) but know I could probably do so if I chose.  At this point DH has a pretty good idea of what I would want if something were to happen so I'm not as sure it's that much of a big deal as it was then.
