Pregnant after a Loss

***papetvet or sinisterkat***

I'm seeking your vet expertise.  We called our vet's office and of course the message said to call the emergency referral.  The lady at the animal hospital was no help at all - or we're just overreacting.  She told us to try feeding him hamburger and rice or some other bland foods.

When I fed Moose yesterday morning he sniffed his bowl and walked away.  Took a few bites, walked away.  He ended up eating most of it by the afternoon.  When my husband fed him again for dinner he barely touched it again.  He tried to add a scrabbled egg.  I guess Moose just tried to eat the egg and not the dog food.

This morning he flat out didn't eat at all.  So, we got some different food to see if he was just sick of his food.  He took a few bites of the new food this afternoon, but still didn't really eat it.

He has gone #1 and #2 normally and ate two milk bones.  We were going to drop him off tomorrow morning for some intense gun dog / obedience training, but I don't think we can now that he's acting funny.

Your thoughts?

Re: ***papetvet or sinisterkat***

  • I typically only recommend a bland diet if a dog is vomiting (and we're re-introducing food slowly) or diarrhea. If a dog is NOT eating, that's a whole different story.

I would skip the training tomorrow, and take him to your regular vet.  My concern is that he isn't feeling well, and inappetence is one of the ways to show that.  What's wrong with him, I can't tell you, but probably something you should get checked out.

Is it hot where you are in the Midwest?  Do you have a/c?  If not, I have seen dogs who are overheated who choose not to eat.

    Good luck...keep us posted!

  • Thanks ladies.  He finally ate his dinner last night after we put it in a different room.  It is warm here, but we have a/c.  DH is going to call our regular vet this morning.  We spoke with the trainer too and he's fine with us waiting a day or two to make sure Moose is better.
