I was just cleaning out a cupboard today and found our list of baby names (color coded on index cards because I'm a big ole nerd) that I made before we found out the genders.
Some I'd designated as first names, some as middle names, and some
as either (like I said - NERD!). Thought I'd post them in case any mamas-to-be need inspiration, and so that everyone can laugh at some of my dodgier choices:
GIRL FIRST NAMES
Elizabeth
Catherine (Cate)
Amelia
Lilah
Heather (one of Ben's favorites - and yeah totally 80s I know, but it actually is a pretty name when you think about the flower)
Clara
Lara
Alice
Coralie
Penelope
Elena
Mia
Eileen
GIRL MIDDLE NAMES
Eve
Aurelia (I was so in love with this!)
Violet
Serena
Cordelia (blame this one on my Anne of Green Gables infatuation..."Would you keep me if I were named Cordelia and had nut-brown hair?")
Lillith
Isadora
Wren
Estella/Stella
Helena
Arden
Hope
Juliet
Vivienne
Genevieve
Camille
Corinne
Airlie
Linnea
Aurora
GIRL FIRST OR MIDDLE NAMES
Eleanor
Marjorie
Ellery
Everleigh/Everley
Lilliana/Liliana
Beatrix (we both adored this as a first name but couldn't figure out a middle name to go with it)
BOY NAMES (we had fewer boy names since we were always going to name a boy William John, so we only had to come up with one name vs two for girls - there are no middle names since the middle name for the second boy was already set on Thomas)
Elliot (I loved this so much!)
Owen
Elias
Peter
Ellis
Lucas
Calvin (I lobbied hard for this but Ben haaaaated it)
Malcolm
Archer
Oliver
Eamon
Nathaniel (Nate)
Isaac
Carter
Colin
Zachary
Jackson/Jack
Logan
Mamas, what were other names that you considered (or for mamas to be, that you are considering)?
Re: baby names!
Ohhhh fun, lemmie go peek at my list (hopefully it's still on the computer somewhere...)
Awww damn, I must have deleted the list! Anyway, from memory, here's a couple of the names we had on our list. We mainly were desperately searching for a girls name as we had our boy's name at the ready.
Ava (or Avery)
Josh was gunning for this name hard. I think it's a very pretty name but wayyyy too popular right now. Popular names put me off them..no matter HOW pretty they are or how much I loved them before they turned popular
Seren
Came across it this time last year. It means 'Star' and is a Welsh name. I loved it, Josh=didn't.
Here's a good website, this is where I found it: https://appellationmountain.net/2009/09/22/name-of-the-day-seren/Tessa (or Tess)
This name was top contender for quite a while because it was the only one we BOTH liked and thought quite pretty. However, I wasn't 100% sold on it.
Scarlett
Josh liked this name and was also lobbying for it. I like it but there are two things wrong with it in my eyes. One: I didn't want her being nicknamed Scar. Two: If she is anything like me and is a blusher (oh I can get QUITE red in the face), this name would be quite unfortunate and apt for teasing.
Isla (pronounced eye-lah).
On it's own merits, I think this is a gorgeous name. However, it rhymed too much with Maya. Just sounded too 'Bobbsy and Wobbsy' to me lol.
Mikayla (or Kayla)
I've loved this name for SO long (since I was 17) that I'm bored with it lol. However, I still like it. Does that make sense?
The middle names of Jane and Florence were always gonna be, I think. I liked the idea of having an uncommon, kinda exotic first name and then tying it to the earth with the lovely, simple Jane.
Florence is purely to honor Josh's paternal grandmother and to pay homage to one of my favourite places in the world, where I spent one happy day; Florence, Italy.
I can't remember the others, I know there were more but the ones above were standouts to me.
As far as alternative boys names:
When we were pregnant with Maya, we had the name Jackson Lucas for if we had a boy. We changed our minds about Jackson by the time we were pregnant with Samara though.
Ethan
Jensen
I can't remember the rest. We weren't going to go with either of those two though.
Oooh, fun! What cracks me up is that some of the names on our list that I thought were unusual are on your lists too! Doh!
Since we were going for a name starting with "A" I really liked the name Aurora. Disney princess! But DH said it was a stripper name. That's what he said about any name he didn't like, actually...
Other names that came up in our discussion of A names were... Audrey, Alexandra, Avery, Annie (he liked this, I hated it)...
Non-A first names we discussed included Lucy, Sydney, Janey, Roxanne (Roxy) and Creedence, Felicity...
Middle names we liked included Rose (family name) and Ann (easy way to get the "A" in)... Also I've long loved Kai!
Boy names starting with A that we liked included Archer, Axel, Angus...
Other boy names we like are Henry (Hank) and Jack... My sister loves the name Kainoa for a boy, nn Noah!
Lisa... LOVE the name Mia. That might have to be on our list for a possible second girl. :-) However, there is a chance that we'll be looking for an "I" on our second child, so I have liked Isla for a while. Or maybe we'll go back to dark horse name Roxanne... We'd have Alexa and Roxy! Or Lexi and Roxy! Too matchy matchy? LOL...
Malia & Dave & Alexa
Happily married since 2-17-08! Three since 9-9-09!
Baby Blog
It is so fun seeing all the possible names out there and just putting it together with our last name. Lisa, I am a total nerd too- I appreciate color coding.
Thanks for posting these. Not knowing the gender of our baby makes baby names so much fun since there are a lot of possibilities.
Did anyone wait until seeing their baby(ies) before actually choosing a name from their list?
love lots of the names everyone already posted!
We struggled for a girl name. We always wanted a few to pick from at the hospital but couldn't come up with more than 1 for a girl so it was going to be Clara Marie (family names) if Jack would have been a girl unless that just really didn't seem to fit then we would have been back to the drawing board and probably would have left the hospital as "baby girl K----" name tbd
boys: John IV was actually not the strong front runner for most of the pregnancy. The other choice was Noah Andrew (family names) and I think DH even let it slip a couple of times and told people that would be the name if it was a boy. A few weeks before he was born we kind of moved back to John IV but it was still 50/50. When he arrived it became so clear his name needed to be John IV.
Our list was just a super condensed version of your boy's list =P It was so hard to come up with a boy's name IMO so we had a really hard time and our lists were super short, esp since MH and I always seemed to like different kinds of names, so it was super hard.
We also had Kai (MH liked a lot) as well as Jordan (which I LOVED but MH hated b/c more girls are named Jordan these days so he thought it was too girly).
For girls, we loved a lot of "A" names (mainly me =P), so like Alicia, Alessandra, Adriana and Ava were ones that I really liked. We also had Sydney, Mikayla, Lyra, Eve on the list. I guess we like girl names that end in "a" too
This wasn't on our list, but I LOVE this name too.
These were on my list too! But Ben nixed Scarlett right away (it didn't even make it onto an index card lol) and a cousin of his who lives in the same town as us used the name Isla for her daughter (born in Nov) so it was taken off the table. Such a gorgeous name, although I agree that it's too matchy matchy with Maya.
Well, here is the list I presented to MH of my favorites, then we discussed them. Several of them he shot down right away, but the ones with asterisks are the ones he kind of liked (he was waaaaay more picky than I!) and we at least somewhat considered. Of course, our little boy is coming later this week, and we haven't officially revealed the name yet, so I haven't included that name on this list at all.
Girls: (In no particular order!)
Johanna*
Annika
Alice
Iris
Julia
Lila
Violet*
Annaliese
Liesl
Astrid
Elsa
Ainsley
Girl middle names would probably have been either Christine (my middle name as well as my mother's name), or Dorothy or Barbara (my grandmothers)
Boys (I tend to like very old-fashioned names!)
Oliver*
George
Nathan
Theodore*
Charles
Edward
Edwin
Benjamin*
MH gets to choose the boys middle name, since the name we agreed on was my #1 choice. He likes it, but it was something of a compromise for him (although he admits that he didn't have any better suggestions, he just doesn't love mine!)
