Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If your LO was not so good with the sippy

When did you get rid of the bottle.  I have given A the sippy since 6 months.  Tried a ton of different ones.  Finally have a straw playtex that is for 2 yrs up that he is able to drink from, but still chooses to have VERY little water from it, although it is offered at every snack, meal and after walks, etc.  SO, I have waited to go to sippy fully until he takes more.  Should I just do it and if he has very little milk just deal?  Hope he learns?

Re: If your LO was not so good with the sippy

  • Your LO is still kind of young... I would wait another 2 months before you do anything that drastic. When my DS was 10 months old he was not interested in sippy either. I started giving it to him more often 2-3 times a day when he was 11-12 months old and he got the hang of it real quick. But before that, he was just not interested...

I would continue to offer the bottle at meals, and offer a sippy cup with snacks... but you certainly don't want to starve your kid! If he is not ready, he is not ready. Keep trying, but don't switch on the kid cold turkey...

At least that's my advice.. GL!

Thanks, but my LO is actually almost 14 mo.  My ticker for some reason changed to say how long until his 2nd bday.  Weird, never noticed that it changed like that.

  • We introduced the sippy 6 months ago, and LO JUST took to it in the last couple weeks.  Give your LO some time-we still have to give LO 2 bottles a day to get enough fluid into him.  One night this week, though, he refused the bottle but then took a sippy by himself at bedtime.  I guess it's all about making some type of small progress!  GL!

I'm sorry!!! I totally thought it said your LO was 10 months old. LOL!

Does your sippy cup that you offer him have handles? I found that my son wouldn't drink from the ones without handles until he was comfortable drinking out of a sippy.

I would continue to offer the bottle, but offer milk in the sippy as well. I found that I had a lot more success when I offered milk than juice or water in the sippy. Maybe try to offer half of his normal milk in the sippy cup, and if he doesn't take it, offer the rest in the bottle. Give him some time to play with it.

I am sure he will catch on soon-- Just keep trying momma! Don't be discouraged. He will make the switch when he is ready.

  • DS was not good with a sippy when we switched cold turkey to them right after his first bday. I did have about 6 different kind and after finding the only one he seemed to like, he figured it out really quickly...as in by day 3 he had no problems holding it and tilting his head back and draining each sippy cup. The only one he'll drink his milk out of is a soft spout one by Pampers...which I like b/c it actually has the ounce markings on them! But, he gets hard spout ones (Take-n-Toss, Graduates, and the straw kind) to drink his water from throughout the day.

We are probably in the minority and I would probably get flamed but we did not get rid of bottles completely until 2ish months ago (my kiddo will be 2 next month). I've used/bought almost every sippy cup on the market and he will only drink more than a few sips from the tommee tippee (spelling?) spouted cups. He does not get the concept of straw cups because he tries to flip them over. Every child transitions at their own pace. I really would not rush him if he is not ready.
  • DS was terrible with a sippy!!! We tried a ton of different ones- used these for a long time- they were the easiest to transition from a bottle to.

Then we moved to these- almost the same thing...

Then to these- kind of half soft/ a little harder....

until we FINALLY can use a normal hard spout sippy- he just started with the hard ones about 2 months ago.

We did both milk/ formula and water in the sippys until he got the hang of it!

GL- DS was really hard- he just refused to use the hard sippys for a long time!!
