We got our board from Home Depot. My DH cut it to size. You need a board so the sensor sits on a stable surface. My crib has the wire slats on the bottom and the sensor wouldn't work properly sitting on the wire.
They have boards that fit inside a standard crib at Home Depot or Lowe's. We got ours at HD - its was like $5ish. We didn't cut it down to the exact size, but it works great. I think the size they mention in the instructions is the minimum you need.
Also, I have a piece of cardboard I use with it for the pack n play for when we travel and that works well too. I wouldn't recommend using cardboard for everyday use, but in a pinch it does work.
