Those of you with a DC going through a growth spurt

How are you coping?

I feel like I am going crazy!  All she does is eat, cry and poop!  She's not sleeping well and this is going on day 3.  She's nursing every hour-- EVERY HOUR.  Last night I gave her some formula since I couldn't take nursing one more time, and that was the only time that she slept for a good stretch of time.  I know breast is best, but wow.. formula is tempting..

  • We went through the every hour thing for 6 days in the second week. I am scared to see what week 3 is going to be like if that wasn't a growth spurt. We caved and gave formula one night and got a 4 hour break. Be sure to pump when you do that though. My LC says to try and avoid the bottle at least until week 4, but I think a happy mommy makes for a better mommy than a crazy and frustrated mommy. Only a week and a half until week 4!

Don't give in to formula.  I know it's tempting!

What I did was accept that all she wanted to do was eat.  I put in Harry Potter, took my shirt off and nursed.  When HP was over I put in the next HP movie (I have all 6 DVDs).  At night I slept on the couch (so I wouldn't distrub my DH) with the baby next to me at boob level.  I nursed while sleeping on my side.

So basically, I went topless for a week straight.  I think I'm in for another growth spurt shortly.   Thank goodness it's summer and I'm not cold without a shirt on!  :)

  • Hang in there. Mine went through the same thing for about 3 days. I never broke down and used formula, but I did use some frozen bottles of breastmilk to just get a few ounces in him at once so he'd go to sleep.

Just like you, baby was eating basically every hour, and usually for 45 minute stretches. This meant not much sleep for mommy. I was really worreid something was wrong, but my friends urged me to stick with it and sure enough he got past it in a couple of days and he's back to every 3-4 hours now.

Hang in there! It will get better!
