Can "Yay!" be a first word?

We clap and say, "Yay" whenever Bug does something new or something cool.  Yesterday & today she said, "Yaaaaaaa" when I clapped for her.  This morning she did it 3 times in a row. 

I know she can't really use it in a sentence, but it's sorta a word...right?!Hmm

    Yup, I think it can be! LO's was "wow"! and he;s said it about 5 times, so I'm pretty sure it is.

    Liam says "Mom-mom-mom-mom" over and over when he's tired/upset... This morning I gave him medicine and he said "Maaaaaaaaaaaammmmaaaammmmaaaa" bc he didn't want it... lol

    I can't tell if he knows that "mom" is me?? He only does this for me though... dunno? Wishful thinking on my part! ha

    DD's been doing this, too. DH and I can't tell if she's trying to say it because she wants me or if she's just repeating it because she hears the word all the time. I can't decide whether I should count it as her first word or not yet.

    DS goes, "UMMMMA UMMMMMA" when he's crying. I highly doubt he is saying mama, but I'll just pretend he is.

    I always counted words when he seemed to understand what it meant and that they were actually saying it.

    In your case, yes. She seems to understand what it means and when to say it. DS' first word was hi.

    YES!!! This is our first word too. Cam says "hi" to everyone as we walk through the store. Usually, peoople answer him too...it is so cute! =)

    You all are TOO CUTE!  I'm doing the same thing wondering if he is really saying words = )  or is it just my wishful thinking.  Although, Liam does do the sign for 'puppy' whenever he sees our dog...but I'm pretty sure he hasn't really said any words yet and meant them!
