Gas and spit-up issues...

Hi Everyone, I need some help.  I have a 6 week old boy here, and he's up to about 3 1/2-4 oz every 3 hrs right now.  I took him to the walk-in clinic near my house last night because for the past few days he has been SCREAMING like he was in pain halfway through his bottle.  They switched him to soy formula instead of the regular.  He hasn't had a bowel movement in 2 days now.  This evening, he was eating his whole bottle, burping fine, but he did get just a little fussy.  At the end of his bottle he spit up what looked to be the whole 4 oz along with a really loud burp.  He had a big smile on his face, and was content.  My question is....was this the big gas bubble that was making him so uncomfortable?  I just need some reassurance that everything is ok here.  I am making a follow -up with his Dr. on Monday.

Thanks in advance ladies!

Re: Gas and spit-up issues...

  • I'm not sure if the spitting up and loud burp was your son passing a big gas bubble but I do know that it is common for soy formula to constipate babies.  It did the same thing to my son and many of my friend's babies.  Have you tried Mylicon drops for your little one's gas? That may help.  The screaming half way through your son's bottle could be acid reflux too.  Good luck! Hope you get some answers soon, I know it's tough. My son has really bad gas pains.

  • We are having the same problems with DD. She has been on soy formula to help with the gas she was having and it seems to have helped a little bit. Now she is having screaming fits when she was content just a second before. During two feedings it seems as if she spit up her entire bottle and during the other feedings she is spitting up as well. We are not sure what to do and plan on taking her to the pedi on Monday.
  • Stop and burp the baby every couple minutes. Give the baby Mylicon BEFORE you give him the bottle. If you notice any further discomfort, give him another dose. (Don't worry- the directions on the label says its safe)

Also try to lay your baby on a hard surface and fold his legs up over his stomach. This will help force gas out of the intestines... It's basically a way to burp their butt so your baby will pass gas. =)
