Anyone's child have a tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy?

We're scheduled for Oct.  Our ENT warned us that he would be in a lot of pain with the tonsils.  How was the recovery of your child?  Thanks.

Re: Anyone's child have a tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy?

  • My son had it at 18 months.  Initially it was ok (right after surgery) he was asking for food (french fries!) and started eating right away.  Our ENT thought that was great because most kids were older and were so scared to move food past it and that delays the healing process.  The next few days were rough.  He was prescribed Tylenol with coedine which helped a TON but made him really constipated (sorry TMI).  But It was only about 3 days before he was back to normal and eating everything.

I was more of a wreck than he was :) especially since a nurse pulled him from my arms and he was scared.  I wish I could have been there when they put him under....but he doesn't even remember it now.  I am the one that is scarred! HA! :)  Good luck!

  • My girls haven't but I had that surgery when I was 15. It sucked.  The Tylenol 3 made me really sick so I was stuck with just Motrin.  All I wanted to eat for the first couple of days was mashed potatoes with lots of gravy.  But by the end of the week I was back at work/school/etc.

  • Can't answer about the tonsils but DS just had his adenoids done Tuesday.  It took maybe 15 minutes.  I was with him when they put him under, and it was strange to see, but I was prepared for a nightmare and really he just tried to get the mask off for a few seconds and was out without much struggle.

Recovery was a breeze.  He was crying when he woke from anesthesia and fussed and cried for about an hour total, from waking to getting home.  He took a 3 hour nap and woke up like nothing ever happened.  By 5pm, he was pissed that I was trying to keep him on the couch, so I followed his lead and he went out and rode his bike on the driveway.

  • I can't answer for my LO yet, but I had it done when I was eight. My younger brother was 5.5 when he had tubes and his adenoids taken out. Recovery for both of us was not bad at all. Mine took a little longer to heal because there was more stuff taken out from the same area. Popsicles were great the first day. Dad told me that I kept asking for one and then when I got it, I took one lick and fell asleep. Keeping your LO hydrated and using the medication to ease the pain for them will help tremendously.

If you have an option to wait (I didn't, my tonsils were so swollen they were almost touching... I had very bad asthma, too.), I wouldn't. My mom had her tonsils and adenoids taken out when she was 22 and the recovery experience was much more traumatic than mine or my brother's. Your LO might not remember it a month from now or even years down the road. My brother remembers having tubes and getting them checked, but he doesn't remember surgery or anything.

  • DS1 had a T&A when he was 7. The worst part was him coming out of the anesthesia. Couple hours later he was discharged and just rested on the couch all day. Only took his pain meds a couple times and that was it.
