We're doing the old method of putting him on the potty a bunch of times a day, but keeping him in a pull-up. I was hoping to talk to other moms about this method, but it seems there aren't any on this board.
I did not do the 3 day method, I have never read it. For us what worked best was naked on the bottom & running them to the bathroom every 20-30 mins & each day I could extend the time & the funny thing is by day 3 both my older boys were asking to use the potty with no accidents. Well, accidents are going to happen.
I received all sorts of advice from different friends & tried their methods.. did not work for us. We figured out something that worked for us. & both my boys were a bit different.. 1 liked rewards & the the other one did not. My older son did not show and interest in the potty & my younger one did.
We didn't, but I read it after the fact and our method was similar I think. We skipped pull ups and went straight to underwear after he started going on the potty every time we tried. We put him on the potty every hour and once he learned to go when he sat every time we switched and he did awesome.
We did M&M rewards for pee and bigger rewards for poop, like a popcicle or cupcake. Lots of praise and potty books. It wasn't a 3 day thing, but we did do the switch cold turkey like the book suggests. However, we did not stay in the house for 3 days and we continued to use diapers at night and naps.
DS never kept his diapers dry between trips to the potty, I know some people wait for that readiness sign. And he treats a pull up the same way. So the only way for him to get it was to put him in underwear and let him start having accidents. I have a friend who cannot get her son trained and is still using pull ups and I really think that's what's holding him back. But every kid is different and I'm sure there are people who use pull ups successfully. I've just never met them. Even our daycare strongly suggests not using them, and I figure they know alot better than I do.
Last night he decided he wasn't wearing pull-ups anymore, and now he won't even put them on. I guess we'll send him to pre-school with a couple extra pairs of shorts. I guess he made up his own mind.
I can't get three days off work to work on the method... but I have heard its very effective. Luckily, DD's teacher at 'school' is very helpful with the potty training and she has been doing very well! We just use pull-ups at nap time and bed time, because DD hasn't learned to control that just yet.
I havent read the 3DPT but on Monday we just put him in underwear instead of a diaper. He calls the pull-ups diapers becasue thats what they are......pull -up diapers. He knows he can pee in them and wont make a mess...so he does. He's done really well, a few accidents (we still use pull ups/diapers at nap and night time), we are working on learning to poop in the potty and use the big toilets outside of thehosue (he is terrified of them).

I didn't do the 3 day method with either of mine and they both trained differently.
When DS started showing readiness signs and using the potty occasionally I put him underwear or let him run around naked at home. I started by taking him to the potty every 30 minutes or so then making it longer intervals. It took a week before he had an accident free day and was telling me every time he had to go. We used a sticker chart with DS and when he filled the sticker chart he got a prize. He filled 2 sticker charts before he stopped asking for a sticker. He naps in underwear but sleeps in a diaper at night still and he has been potty trained for over a year. We only used pull-ups when we were out for the first 2 weeks. I personally don't like pull-ups as they are too much like a diaper IMO.
DD started showing signs of readiness at 18 months. She was sitting on the potty before bath and sometimes when DS would go. She eventually started telling me as soon as she would wet/dirty her diaper and wanted it off immediately. I sat her on the potty when we would change her diaper and tell her that pee/poop goes in the potty and when she put her pee/poop in the potty she could wear her big girl Minnie panties. At 20 months she took herself potty while running naked before bath. I put her in panties the next day and by day 3 she was accident free. We used M&Ms as reward for her because stickers didn't work. DD also naps in panties but sleeps in a diaper at night still.
