My dad was shocked to learn how expensive daycare is where we live, although I'm sure he'd probably have been surprised no matter what it was since he hasn't needed it for 25 years lol. Anyway, the costs of all of the centers are very similar and they average around $71 per child, per day for babies under 1 year old - that's $355 per week (or $1,538 per month) for one child.
What's it like where you live?
Re: how much does daycare cost in your area?
My area is quite expensive (I think!) We aren't going with the most expensive (that would be Montessori, at about $2000 a month). But our center isn't far off. We're going to pay approximately $1750 a month for the infant room at Bright Horizons. There are a few cheaper places, but not by much ($100-200 a month cheaper), and they weren't as nice. I didn't get nearly as good of vibes at those places as I did at our center.
Of course, it would definitely be cheaper to find an in-home place, but we don't really know anyone in the area to give us a good rec, and I feel better about a big center, anyway (just a personal preference).
Speaking of which, we just had our spot starting in October confirmed a few weeks ago....yay!!!
My workplace is supposedly planning a daycare center for employees to start on the fall of 2011.....I can't wait, as it will most definitely be cheaper. Probably the only way we can afford to have another kid, unless I stay home!
from what i've found - and i haven't finished looking yet, definitely getting a late start! - is that it's anywhere from $1600-$2k/month around here for a full-time daycare. ...$20k/year for daycare, or $30k/year for a nanny - more than a lot of college tuitions. it's crazy
i think my parents sent me to daycare for like, $300 or $500/month. sigh.

The Bright Horizons at the government building where DH works costs $1750/mo for non-govt workers. For govt workers, we get a $200 discount so it costs us $1450/mo. Still pretty expensive! We just found out that the price will drop about $100/mo once Alexa is moved from the infant room to the toddler room. She'll move up around 12 months, when she is both developmentally ready and there is a spot.
A friend asked me if I wanted to share her nanny when the woman she was doing the nanny share left. But I added it up and it would have cost us $2000/mo to nanny share, give or take depending on how many hours we used per day. Plus it wouldn't be as easy as daycare since we'd have to provide all the equipment and other stuff.

we live in a low cost of living area (relative to Seattle). Jack's center costs $810/month and goes down after he is out of the infant room, and again we he is out of the "waddler room" (12-24mo. room). It is attached to the church but doesn't have religous aspects unless you continue on in the k-12 private school.
On a side note - It is probably the best center in town - anytime I say where he is going everyone has positive things to say. They don't have teacher turn over and all teachers have degrees in early childhood education - this is their "career" not just a job for them. The other centers are chain type (miniskool and kindercare) and slightly cheaper but I didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling about the workers and know they experience very high turnover both for the children and workers so that isn't the best sign. Most babies in Jack's infant room have older siblings in the center - a sign I really liked. I got us on the waiting list at probably 15 weeks and didn't get in until he was 4mo old.
the center at my work is subsidized and would have been 1/2 price. But everythign works out for a reason and I probably would not feel as comfortable with the care he would be getting there.
Montesorri school doesn't start until 2.5 and it is currently about 1000/month for school+care until pick up( up to 6pm).
Sandra - have you ever heard how much Lakeside is? I was a nanny during college for a family that paid me very generously and their oldest started middle school while I was with them - on top of books, laptop, actvity fees the tuition was +30k - much, much more than my college (and law school) tuition per year!!! eek.
We're not doing daycare (we're getting help from the grandparents instead), but when I asked my co-workers, they said that it was about $1300 per kid for daycare...
is that US$ or AUS$?
Here it's $300-$400/week also for an infant, and I think it gets a little cheaper as they get older (although I'm sure prices increase over time as well!)
ETA: we don't use daycare, so I told MH if he were to get a job and I had to put the LO in daycare, then he'd have to make at least that much money! LOL
WOW! The cost of living around here is MUCH lower so I'm probably not a good comparison! When Ellie was in daycare full-time (she's 8 now and only goes in the summer) it was about $125/week and slowly went down $10-15 when she moved to an "older" room. I think the kids in her same daycare are now paying around $140/week, so still pretty cheap. You can drop off and pick up anytime in the 6:30am-6:00 pm range. I usually always picked her up right around 4, but it was nice to have the option to leave her there longer if I needed to run errands or something.
She is in the same daycare now but with the school age kids (there are about 15 of them and she's grown up with almost all of them and they all go to the same school!). It is also just $125/week and it includes all food, snacks and the field trips they take all summer. They do something almost everyday in a big van; library, park and one big trip once/week like mini-golf, museums, etc. Another great perk is that they pick a session and if you sign up, they take the kids to swimming lessons for 2 weeks, something I wouldn't be able to do during the summer! She LOVES her daycare!!
Wow, I had no idea daycare was so expensive here.
Me being military, my son goes to the daycare on the base and I pay $277/every 2 weeks or $18/day. Only thing is I pay whether he's there or not...when I fly to see my parents for 3 weeks, I'll still be paying to hold the slot.
