Hi all,
I'm new to this board--DH and I are expecting our first in February! We've only been in the Upstate for a year and don't know many people with babies here, so I feel like I'm starting from scratch with a lot of things. We live in Seneca and I work in Greenville (DH is getting his PhD at Clemson).
Are there are good baby stores, besides babies r us, for cribs/strollers/car seats, etc? I'd love to find somewhere with people who are a little more knowledgeable about the products they sell.
Any cloth diaper stores? I've googled and not found anything...we're going to go to some stores in Charlotte next time we're there, but it'd be nice to find something closer to home.
Any experiences with Upstate OB/GYN and/or St. Francis? I've only had one appt with Upstate OB/GYN so far and haven't met any doctors, but I'd love to hear others experiences. I plan to have a med-free birth if at all possible, and I'm not sure how that we will be taken once I do meet with the doctors there.
I look forward to any responses at all and to joining this board!
Re: Upstate moms
Hi! Congratulations!!
Have you considered Poole and Bass in Seneca? They are super natural birth friendly and serve women at Oconee Med. Sometimes the smaller hospitals are the way to go. Upstate and St. Fran have a pretty high intervention rate. The natural birth community tends to steer clear of St Francis.
The only cloth diaper store is at Labors of Love in Spartanburg. With the distance, you'd probably do best online. There is a monthly cloth diaper meeting in Greer at the Symmes Library every 2nd Thursday at 10am. Many expectant moms pop in to put their hands on lots of different kinds of cloth diapers.
If you tend toward more natural choices, you might consider joining the Attachment Parenting Meetup group out of Greenville. They have a great message board for local resources.
Hope that helps!
Welcome to the area :-). I have experience with both Upstate and St. Francis. For the most part I really liked Upstate OB, the drs were great and super cautious as well as very guiding. There was only 1 dr I didnt like and I was able to only see her once. I liked St. Francis a lot, but I was okay with a medication. The nurses were very caring and understanding as well as the lactation consultants. One of the nurses spent over an hour with me helping my DD latch on and help us with techniques, she did not at all have to do it.
I had a good experience. Welcome and I hope you find what you are looking for.
There is a new baby store opening at Shops at Greenridge "Buy Buy Baby" There are also several consignment and boutique stores in the area :-)
Hello-
Welcome to the area and congratulations. I am due in September (this is my first) and moved to Greenville in November. I have been going to Highlands Center for Women which I love. There are 6 doctors there and after meeting with all them, I have no complaints. The nurses there are great as well, very patient, informative and friendly. I will be going to St. Francis and, from what I can tell and from what I hear, it sounds like a good hospital. As far as baby stores, I recently walked into Burlington and was surprised by the selection they have there-much more than I would have thought. I have also seen quite a few second hand shops on Augusta Road. Good luck!
This, exactly!
Most insurance companies do not cover doulas yet, but if they do, it works as a reimbursement, so you would pay the doula, and she would help you get the information needed to submit to the insurance company after the birth.
As far as the cost, it depends on how much experience the doula has as well as the area you live in. In California, for example, you could spend $800-$1000, where in the Greenville area the median is $400-500. A doula in the process of certification may offer reduced fee or even free services.
I would be very happy to meet with you, or any other Upstate Moms, for a FREE consultation meeting to answer more questions about what a doula does and why having one is well worth the price. A doula will definitely help you pursue a VBAC. Hope this helps!
Welcome! I also went to Highlands Center for Women for my first baby and delivered at St. Francis. I didn't have a doula, but I did have my husband and mom who were really supportive of my wishes. My mom gave birth four times naturally, so she had some experiance. I really like my OB group and have no problems with St. Francis. I chose St. Francis because I didn't want to change rooms three times during my stay. But they changed their policies about a month before I delivered. I only changed rooms once though - so not to bad.
With this baby I'm not sure where I will deliver because I have a high risk pregnancy. Greenville Memorial has a level III NICU where St. Francis has level II. So this time I will go where is best for baby!
