Were you put on BC before IUI or IVF??

Hey everyone! I posted a few weeks ago about DH's MFI issues... To make a long story short, after a few weeks of testing we have decided to move forward with IUI w/ injectables. AF came for me on Friday, so I called Houston Fertility Institute and we are going to get the ball rolling ASAP so that I can get things going this cycle.

The nurse called in a prescription for birth control and she said this is so they can control my cycle and keep my ovaries dormant before the procedures...I think?

Was anyone else put on BC prior to IUI or IVF? I guess it makes sense so they can manipulate my cycle, but it kinda caught me off guard.

I have an HSG test next week, then on Friday 7/30 I will start my 10-day injectables and hopefully I will be insiminated on 8/10. Can't wait to get this show on the road!!! I'm excited to have this forum as a support system through this journey! Thanks for sharing your stories.

I was not for IVF but lots of women are.

Never heard of it for IUI though.

I was put on BCP as we were gearing up for our first IUI. It ended up being converted to an IVF cycle. I was also put on BCP prior to my FET.

I was on b/c prior to IVF---it is so they can control the timing of the stims and transfer and such. It is definitely weird to go on b/c to get pregnant though

i was for IUI for the same reason but I also do not get AF on my own due to PCOS

Yup, BCP are TOTALLY normal before IVF. I don't know about IUI cause I never have done it, but from what I have learned it is also a fairly normal. They use BCP so that they can regulate your system and they can start monitoring your body. It is weird to be on BCP before starting a cycle, you would think it is counter intuitive but really it's not.

Also, you might want to find LCB she lives in Houston and knows all about the ferility clinics in your area. She might be a great resource for you!!

We did a TI with injects cycle and got pregnant with DD and are now doing our first cycle of TI with injects to TTC no. 2, and we started with a month of BCP both times. My ovaries tend to be just loaded down with follicles (the RE said it looked like a "field of follicles" last time lol) because of the PCOS, and the pills help clear them out so we're starting with a normal baseline.

i was not- but the nurse mentioned that if XYZ happened that they might consider it - i told her i was not really up for it since being on BCP gives me migraines and since I can't take migraine meds while in cycles I really wanted to avoid it.... I never ended up needing it - I got pg on my first cycle of clomid/IUI with Griffin and my 2nd cycle with the twins. I don't remember exactly what the reason was that they would have done it... talk to your doc if you are concerned - might not be necessary.

Yes, on IUI #5 but RE put me on it because I had developed cysts on my ovaries BUT that was the cycle that worked! GL!

I am a patient at HFI ... Dr. Witz! Love him. Have had 3 cycles 6 iuis with injections (bravelle) and trigger. BCP is the norm.

Bcp are used to supress your ovaries before starting a cycle and to shrink cysts if your like me and end up with them after a medicated cycle.

Good luck! I was one that was put on Birth control before my IUI-Inject cycle. That way we could force a period ( I know I did provera before) but this way they could do xrays during the month as well.

Yes, for IVF and FET. It was to suppress my ovaries. Many women do Lupron instead, but I think bc I'm DOR, I did BC instead bc I'm basically already suppressing myself.

No on our IUI, but we didn't do an IUI with injectables (just clomid), but I was on BCP for our IVF and 2 FETs. Good luck!
