I have been having really bad swelling that seems to get worse everyday. My doctor said that I should really be pushing my water intake but never specified an amount other than saying "a lot." Does anyone know what amount of water is recommended each day? How much water do you drink a day? TIA!
Re: Swelling and water question
I will have to try the straw. That's a great idea! Thanks.
My advice is to get a large like 32 oz or 64 oz water bottle, a lemon wedge would help because it can be a natural diuretic. (old wives tale) my grandmother is a retired nurse with 37 years under her belt and that's what she had me do and it has helped.
beware of straws if you have bad gas or heartburn, sucking thru a straw will make gas worse.
Keep your feet elevated, as soon as the start swelling get off of them and prop them up!!
Compression hose help too!
Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1).
Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!
I also use a straw - it does help!
And a nurse told me that watermelon brings down the swelling. I tried this last week and it worked wonders for me. Though I've hardly had any swelling at all with pregnancy, the watermelon took care of the only swelling I did have. It's a natural diuretic (sp?) so it helps your body get rid of fluids that much more easily, apparently. So that on top of the minimum of 64oz of water should help at least a little, I'd think. Good luck!
I was told 64 oz. minimum, but to increase that during hot days, which is every day! My poor knuckles are so swollen when I wake up. I am definitely retaining water.
Try putting lemon slices in your water to help with the swelling.
I live in hot and humid Florida and my midwife started me at a gallon a day. I was still swelling, So we upped it to 2 gallons a day (which by the way was miserable to accomplish). My pee was totally clear!!! The swelling was totally gone so they have backed me down to 1.5 gallons a day, which is 24 8 oz. glasses a day. It is A LOT, but doable and it has worked wonders....especially with lemon slices and lots of ice.
Something else that helps is to add some espom salt to your bath water at night. It draws water out and reduces bloating and swelling.
