Swelling and water question

I have been having really bad swelling that seems to get worse everyday.  My doctor said that I should really be pushing my water intake but never specified an amount other than saying "a lot."  Does anyone know what amount of water is recommended each day?  How much water do you drink a day?  TIA!

Re: Swelling and water question

  • My doctor wasn't specific, but said that my urine should barely be yellow.  I don't keep up with how much water I drink, but I'm constantly drinking.  I use a straw and it helps me drink more for some reason.

  • I've been having the same problem. My doc told me 3L per day minimum. So I've been bringing a large water bottle with me every where I go now for some time. I guess it helps (cant say for sure). What seems to help the most is keeping my feet up and staying out of the heat.  The humid days are THE WORST. :(
  • An average person is suppose to drink 64oz a day.. so.. at a minimum 64 ozs. I bought a 32oz container and just drink two of those.. it helps me keep track/ensure I'm drinking enough.

I will have to try the straw.  That's a great idea!  Thanks.

  • I remember telling my dr that I drink abotu 70 to 80oz of water a day and he said a pg person should drink about 100oz a day. I was like WHOA! I think i will stick with what I am drinking.
  • My advice is to get a large like 32 oz or 64 oz water bottle, a lemon wedge would help because it can be a natural diuretic. (old wives tale)  my grandmother is a retired nurse with 37 years under her belt and that's what she had me do and it has helped.

beware of straws if you have bad gas or heartburn, sucking thru a straw will make gas worse.

    • Cutting down on sodium. Don't add extra salt to food at the table, and look for reduced-sodium processed foods.
    • Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh fruits and vegetables ? especially those naturally rich in water, such as watermelon, onion, celery and cucumbers ? can make you urinate more frequently, reducing water retention.
    • Drinking more water. Be sure to drink at least eight glasses of water daily.

Keep your feet elevated, as soon as the start swelling get off of them and prop them up!!

    Compression hose help too!

  • I would say I drink about 8 glasses a day on average.  This is not my only fluid intake (I still have a soda a day too and sometimes a glass of juice) either.  Now as far as it helping the swelling...good luck I feel like all I do is drink and my feet have never really went down...

  • I drink about 100 oz of water a day.  I also have a jug that holds 32 oz and I drink like 3 & 1/2 of those and I normally always throw in a Propel or something like that so I don't get bored with water.

  • I'm swelling too, but luckily just in my feet/ankles.  I drink about 4-5 liters of water, maybe more a day.  Try limiting your sodium intake as much as possible too! GL!

  • I also use a straw - it does help!

And a nurse told me that watermelon brings down the swelling. I tried this last week and it worked wonders for me. Though I've hardly had any swelling at all with pregnancy, the watermelon took care of the only swelling I did have. It's a natural diuretic (sp?) so it helps your body get rid of fluids that much more easily, apparently. So that on top of the minimum of 64oz of water should help at least a little, I'd think. Good luck!

I drink ALL day. I don't know how much exactly but I don't think I could possibly consume any more water. I'm devoted to it, but I am still swollen. The only way I could get my swelling down was propping my feet up on a bunch of pillows and hardly getting up at all. I've given up unless they look really bad then I stay off them for a little while.

I was told 64 oz. minimum, but to increase that during hot days, which is every day! My poor knuckles are so swollen when I wake up. I am definitely retaining water.

Try putting lemon slices in your water to help with the swelling.

  • I live in hot and humid Florida and my midwife started me at a gallon a day. I was still swelling, So we upped it to 2 gallons a day (which by the way was miserable to accomplish). My pee was totally clear!!! The swelling was totally gone so they have backed me down to 1.5 gallons a day, which is 24  8 oz. glasses  a day. It is A LOT, but doable and it has worked wonders....especially with lemon slices and lots of ice.

Something else that helps is to add some espom salt to your bath water at night. It draws water out and reduces bloating and swelling.
