What to bring to a "Weird Food Party?"

I got this evite from a friend of a friend:

Do you want fries with that...mayonnaise?  Do you love to snack on chocolate.... syrup straight from the spoon?

The time has come for the long-threatened WHAT DO YOU EAT WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING? Weird Food Sampling.

Come out of the closet with your weirdest food love or a nostalgic snack/meal from days past.  If your diet hasn't ever strayed from the norm, feel free to pick a recipe for a slightly off-the-beaten-path dish that you'd be willing to try and possibly to love.

I can't think of anything I eat though that is super weird to make! Maybe white-trashy- like hot dogs and rice or tater tot casserole.

I do eat salsa, chips and cottage cheese, but that's not really a dish.

Any other ideas? What do I bring??

  • DH puts pineapple pieces in his cottage cheese before he eats it.  I also love the idea of tater tot casserole- that stuff is awesome and not very many people make it anymore (I don't think).

  • I think that the salsa chips & cottage cheese would probably be good. That's a weird combo ;)

I think this is a really neat idea. I'm not sure what I would bring though!

  • I would suggest chocolate chip cookie dough.  I used to eat that raw with a spoon and it's yummy but weird.  I do like the idea of tater tot casserole because I've never heard of it.  When I was in college, I would put tuna in my macaroni and cheese and people thought that was strange.
  • What about sandwiches with potato chips?  I always put chips in my sandwiches and people always give me strange looks.

My cousin eats peanut butter and brown sugar sandwiches and I think that is really weird, but I don't like peanut butter.

  • All interesting ideas, but I feel like I need to bring a dish. I also think grilled cheese sandwiches with jelly are good, as are peanut butter and colby cheese sandwiches, but I wouldn't want to bring them. Unless maybe they are cut up small.

    Sigh. Shouldn't be that hard!

ETA: OK, I got the tater tot recipe that a friend of mine uses. It was really good, but I'm definitely grossed out by the recipe! It will be my first experience with veg-all!

Brown ground beef (or sausage) w/ onions.

    Drain grease.

Add can Cream of celery, can of cream Mushroom and a can of Veg-all.

Layer tater tots, then mixture, the tots, then mixture.

Bake at 400 until done.  Add cheese for flavor.

  • LOL @ "add cheese for flavor" !  What would tater tot casserole be without cheese?  I've never had it before, but can only imagine...  Actually, before you posted the recipe, i was just picturing tater tots in a casserole dish w/ cheese and nothing else, haha.

  • No ideas for you as I would also be stumped but the party sounds like a lot of fun. Hopefully your friend has a rule about everyone trying the dishes they didn't bring otherwise there might be a lot of food that goes untouched if people are picky.

    Have fun!

Oh, and please come back after the party and share what everyone else brings. I'm really curious.

    Will do!

  • I used to love peanut butter and syrup mixed together and made a spread to put on saltines. Sweet and salty. Granted I haven't had that since I was like 10.

I also like peanut butter and sliced bananas on graham crackers.

Or banana's split down the middle but in a foil "boat" marshmellows and chocolate chips inside the banana toasted until everything is gooey and melted. YUmmmm

  • We went to a party similar to this a few years ago, and took "Dump Cake." Basically, you drain and dump a can of crushed pineapple in a 9x13 dish, cover with cherry pie filling, then a yellow cake mix, and finally put some pats of butter on top. You bake until the cake mix is set and browned.  This was my childhood dig-in-the-cabinet-and-fix-something favorite.

    Hope you enjoy the party!

  • I've made tater tot casserole before and it was fantastic. I used a slightly different  recipe though.

First of all, skip the veg-all. It is sort of mushy and gross.

I used frozen corn and frozen baby peas as my vegetables. I also put in a ton of cheese both in the tater tot/veggie/ soup mixture and on top.

I didn't use any celery. I used only cream of mushroom soup for the soup base.

  • Bagels with cream cheese dipped in thick brown gravy.  Sounds weird, but the juxtaposition of the cream cheese and gravy is tasty
