My DD is 18 mos old, and we plan to start PTing by the end of the year. I'm trying to just educate myself now, and gets some plans in place. We are also trying to talk more with DD about it, etc.
My question is, what terminology do you use for their private parts? We plan to use bottom, but I don't feel comfortable with vagina, as far as potty training goes. I'm not so immature that I can't say the word, but it just feels weird. For one, urine does not come out of your vagina--it comes out of your urethra. I don't feel like getting that anatomically correct with a toddler.
I know some people are against it, so please don't flame. :-) But I'd almost rather use a cutesy, child friendly term for girls parts as whole--for now anyway. We can have a detailed anatomy lesson later. :-) Any ideas?
Re: What terminology do you use?
Can't help you with girl parts, but DS has a pee pee and a butt, so no flames here! I say call it whatever you are both comfortable with, I think when I was little my mom used bottom too.
Honestly, we don't really talk about parts when it comes to PT. I never sat down and explained to him where his pee and poop was going to come from, so it just never came up. The only reason we have to say anything at all is b/c we taught him how to hold his pee pee down, which you won't have to do.
Same with us. We haven't discussed parts while she's PT.
Good to know
As usual, I'm sure I'm putting too much thought into it.
I like how I post on a nat'l board and get the answers from my NC girls. hehe.
I hadn't planned ahead what we would call her parts and this morning she was not wearing underwear for a couple mins while I did something for the baby and she grabbed herself fairly roughly. I told her to be gentle when touching her vagina (the word just came naturally to me, as anatomically incorrect as it is).
2 mins later she was running around the living room telling DH 'Look, Daddy, gina!' (pronounced with a long 'i') over and over lol. It was both horrifying and hilarious at the same time lol. We think since vagina is actually not the correct word for it anyway and I really don't want her running around telling DH to look at her labia, that we may go with "privates" from now on.
We use many words for her bottom (booty, bum, tush, heiny, butt) and she seems to understand all of them.
