Do you or would you like the have the laundry on the 2nd floor?
We are looking to build & I found a house plan that I'm liking right now where the bedrooms & the laundry are on the 2nd floor. It seems like a good idea because 90% of the laundry created would be coming from the bedrooms & bathrooms upstairs.
I've never lived in a 2 story so give me your thoughts please! TIA
Re: NTR: If you live in a 2 story house ?
I hadn't ever thought of this. Thanks for mentioning it!

"lurking"
We are building a two story as we speak and debated putting the laundry room on the 2nd floor. In our current house, it's in the basement. After much thought, we ended up putting it on the main floor in the new house because my DH gets fairly dirty at work and I liked the idea of him being able to walk in through the garage and have the laundry room right there so his dirty clothes didn't get dragged upstairs.
I think if you have it in a room (and not just a closet type thing) and possibly have it by a bathroom (or between bathrooms) to where it'll be separated from the bedrooms, the noise wouldn't matter. And, then you'd have the convenience of being on the second floor and not have to worry about the noise. Also, many of the new washers and dryers (especially front loading ones) don't make much noise anyway.
Good luck making your decision!
YES! My in-laws had this in the house DH grew up in and MIL loved it! If I could build my own house this would be on the top of the requests.
Dragging laundry up and down the stairs with a toddler or baby that wants to go with you is a pain and sometimes you don't want to just wait until they are napping.

this is a great idea!! I've alwasy wanted a mud room for that purpose. wet clothe from the rain. snow gear in the winter. so much easier.
Sage Mommy: You could add a laundry chute that drops into a first floor laundry instead. laundry shoots are not done anymore because they are a fire hazard. it creates a path directly to the bedrooms for smoke to travel, or if clothes get stuck in there they go up in flames real fast..
ABSOLUTELY!
This is actually something I have hated in the last two places we lived. At our last house, it was in the basement (along with a family room and office) and at this place (which is 3 levels), it is in the basement (along with the family room and office again). It is SO inconvenient (and annoying!) to lug all of the laundry down 2 flights of stairs and then back up 2 flights of stairs. So yes, I would definitely prefer it to be on the top level where all of our bedrooms are.

I guess 3 floors: basement, main, & upstairs. All rooms including master are upstairs. I think I'd much rather run up stairs to change out a load then to lug all the clothes upstairs.

I can see this too with DH but, I could always just put a laundry basket in the mud room for him to put his dirty clothes.

Yep, all bedrooms including master would be upstairs.

I do. I love it. I HIGHLY recommend a plastic lip under the washer to protect in the possibility of a flood. Also make sure your homeowners insurance covers a flood too.
ENJOY!
If I could build I would put the laundry off of the master bathroom upstairs. I hate having it down stairs.
ETA: Noise isn't a problem with the newer front loaders. We have ours right off of our family room and you don't notice they're running until you open the door. There are different kinds walls and insulation you can use to minimize the sound as well.
We have our washer/dryer on the 2nd floor and I love it. In our last house (2 story) it was in the basement and it was such a pain. We did a complete gut and remodel on our current house and that was one of the must-haves for us. I am way better about staying on top of laundry.
And we have ours in a laundry closet in the hall. It is next to the kids' bathroom - probably 15' from DD's room and 10' from DS' room. The noise really isn't a problem at all and we often run it at night. Just make sure you put some sort of large pan under the washer in case it overflows, leaks, etc.
having had my washer overflow, get it if fixed, then overflow again when I wasn't paying attention and didn't realize it for a few hours, I was so thankful that we hadn't put them upstairs.
Ours are in a finished basement at the moment, but would prefer them on the mainfloor. It was be easy to keep an eye on the laundry and keep throwing in another load throughout the day without having to make it a point to go upstairs. And, its only one flight of stairs vs. 2, which would be an improvement in my world, anyway!
Noise is a consideration though, I wouldn't want a loud washer/dryer on my mail floor while trying to talk with family or watch TV.....
This!!! I grew up in a split entry house and the laundry was right outside our bedrooms in the hall...the noise wasn't ever an issue.
